FREE 8-Hour MAT Waiver Course at CMC
The New Hampshire Medical Society, New Hampshire Nurses Association, NH Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Services, Anthem Foundation and New Engalnd Addiction Technology Transfer Center Network are pleased to offer this buprenorphine waiver course.
- Training is available for physicians (MDs/DOs), Physician Assistants (PAs), Nurse Practitioners (NPs), Clinical Nurse Midwives (CNMs), Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs) and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) interested in seeking their waiver to prescribe buprenorphine in the treatment of opioid use disorders. To obtain the waiver to prescribe, providers are required to take eight hours of training.
- Following trainings, physicians who have successfully completed the course, may apply to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) to obtain the waiver.
- 8 AMA PRA Category 1 credits, or 8 Nursing Contact Hours, or 8 AAPA Category 1 CME credits and a Buprenorphine Training Completion Certificate will be awarded to those who complete all 8 hours of the course and receive a minimum cumulative score of 75% on the examination.
- Residents may take the course and apply for their waiver when they receive their DEA license. They will need to maintain their certificate of completion following the training.
- Physician Assistants (PAs), Nurse Practitioners (NPs), Clinical Nurse Midwives (CNMs), Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs) and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) who take this 8-Hour MAT waiver course will receive a certificate of completion and can apply it toward the 24-hour training requirement established by the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA). For the addtional 16 hours, PCSS-MAT is also providing NPs, CNMs, CNSs, CRNAs and PAs with the coursework FREE and together they meet the required training to be eligible to apply for the waiver to prescribe buprenorphine.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this activity participants should be able to:
- Screen and identify patients with OUD and define evidence-based treatments.
- Discuss the pharmacology of opioids as it relates to treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) patients.
- Describe the fundamentals of office-based opioid treatment including the treatment of the co-morbid patient.
- Explain the process of buprenorphine induction as well as stabilization and maintenance.
- Discuss all FDA approved antagonist and agonist medications to treat OUD.
- Discuss basic office protocols including medical record documentation and confidentially.
- Utilize evidence-based resources to ensure providers have the confidence to prescribe buprenorphine for patients with OUD.
- Recognize the importance of obtaining a waiver to begin treating patients with OU
To be awarded a maximum designated credits and a Buprenorphine Training Completion Certificate you must complete all 8 hours of the course and receive a minimum cumulative score of 75% on the examination.
Those passing the course (and additional online coursework for PAs, NPs, CNMs, CNSs and CRNAs) will be able to complete the waiver application online.
Approved by the NH Board of Medicine as Continuing Medical Education (CME) for the NH Opioid Prescribing Competency Requirement.

PA Designation Statement: American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 8 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 12/31/2019. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
