Creating Layers
Guest Artist:Lisa Orr
2 Day Workshop
$245,
$200 for current Art Alliance Students
August 14 9-5pm
August 15 1-5pm
This 2 day workshop will focus on complex layering of textures and slips to create lowfire glazes as rich as gemstones. Both functional wares and small-scale sculptural pieces will be demonstrated. Initially, the class will be introduced to low relief texture sprigging, stamping and soft forming techniques. Students will view examples by slides and demonstration after which they will make one of their own. Next, students will learn how nichrome wire can be utilized for attaching smaller moving parts. Color layering will be emphasized by use of engobes under transparent low fire glazes.
After pursuing study in ceramics in central Texas in the early 80’s, Lisa received on-the-job training from several local potters. She spent some years developing her work and selling it at regional shows before returning to academia, eventually earning an MFA and studying abroad. In the mid 90’s she returned to Texas to continue her ceramics career. Her distinctive work has brought recognition and awards over the years.
Currently she teaches, presents workshops at universities and art centers, shows internationally, and looks for ways to promote the appreciation of handmade functional ceramics. She is a founder of the Art of the Pot Austin Studio Tour bringing North America’s most cutting-edge ceramists and their work to central Texas annually on Mother’s Day weekend.
