A Tale of Three Levels: One Fellow’s Work at the Unit, Regional, and National Offices of FWS

In this 1-hour webinar, Naomi Fireman, Advanced Public Lands Transportation Fellow at the USFWS Headquarters Transportation Branch, will provide a recap of the work she has accomplished from 2020-2022. This work includes a rotation as regional transportation coordinator; planning, policy, and research at the national level; and project implementation at the station level. 

Presenter Bio:

Naomi Fireman
Naomi began her transportation fellowship with the Potomac River National Wildlife Refuge Complex in July 2019 and advanced to USFWS headquarters in August 2020. At the Transportation & Data Management branch, Naomi focuses on national-level projects that aid the Regional Transportation Coordinators and HQ transportation analysts with planning and implementation. These projects include but are not limited to creating an inventory of past Federal Lands Access Program projects, analyzing visitor satisfaction survey data, designing SharePoint sites, developing educational initiatives, and helping support new fellows. Naomi also detailed as Transportation Coordinator for the Mountain-Prairie Region to develop the five-year transportation plan, aid data reconciliation for the Road Inventory Program, and coordinate projects with Federal Highway Administration. 

Naomi graduated from Oberlin College in the spring of 2019 with majors in Environmental Studies and Biology, and a minor in Spanish. Specifically, she focused on Sustainable Cities and Systems Ecology during her undergraduate career and worked on combining these pathways in all of her various projects. Her prior research includes studying the social and political implications of organic rice farming in Japan, working with wild bees in the Ecuadorian cloud forest, and exploring hazelnuts as a sustainable food crop for the Midwest region. Naomi is passionate about equitable and sustainable urban development, conservation, climate change mitigation, and improving the relationship between humans and their landscapes. She is serving as the Advanced Public Lands Transportation Fellow for the HQ Transportation & Data Management branch until early 2022 and has enjoyed bringing her problem-solving skills and interdisciplinary perspective to the work.
