The Materials Landscape:  Reducing Your Material Footprint While Improving Occupant Health

Presenter: John Mlade, LFA, WELL Faculty, LEED Fellow

Project Description      1.0LU/HSW AIA

The building materials landscape is quickly changing. Designers are now taking a more sophisticated look at building products with the consideration of Health Product Declarations, Environmental Product Declarations and transparency. We will discuss current materials certifications, their role in building rating systems today, and how specifiers and manufacturers can both navigate where the industry is looking to find the most fitting product. From embodied carbon through persistent toxicity, we will unpack the questions that everyone is asking.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand basic concepts and definitions related to Environmental Product Declarations and trends in material ingredient and impact disclosure.
  2. Understand the difference between EPDs and materials ingredient and health disclosures.
  3. Know which tools and websites can be used to evaluate EPDs and materials disclosure comparisons.
  4. Explain and anticipate new trends in material specifications.

Speaker Bio

Since 2001, John has supported clients in shaping sustainability strategies that succeed for the environment, people and the bottom line. His professional focus has been on health in the built environment, from air quality through materials health and transparency, active design and biophilia. To that end, he is one of the first RESET ASPs, serves on the HPDC Technical Committee, is a trained Living Building Challenge auditor on behalf of ILFI, and promotes health through his roles as a Fitwel Ambassador and WELL Faculty. With John's support, both design team and manufacturer clients are able to navigate the healthy materials and transparency landscape including HPDs, the LBC Red List and leading product libraries and tools.
