The 2018 Illinois Accessibility Code...Insights and Updates

Nationally recognized expert in ADA and local accessibility code compliance.

Leah Riley is a Senior Code Consultant with Burnham Nationwide, Inc and has over twenty years of experience in interpreting and providing consulting services for the Chicago Building Code and all local, state and federal accessibility codes.  She has also served on the BOMA Codes Committee for almost as long. Ms. Riley has gained recognition throughout the construction industry as one of the foremost experts in ADA interpretation through her years of service which included working for the City of Chicago Mayor’s Office for Peoples with Disabilities and has recently served on behalf of BOMA Chicago on the Committee to redraft the Chicago Accessibility Code.

Program Description:

This seminar will provide a better understanding of the requirements for new construction, alterations and additions for different uses as required per the 2018 Illinois Accessibility Code and discuss the differences between the old and new. 

  • Understand the history of the Illinois Accessibility Code (IAC) and final Code Changes.
  • Identify similarities and differences between the new IAC requirements and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), used as a basis for the changes.
  • Gain awareness of the importance of detailing permit drawings to clearly show the accessibility and recognize elements that are often overlooked.
  • Understand the repercussions of non-compliance with the IAC.
