DETAILS:            The Middle Blue River Green Infrastructure(GI) pilot project was the first large-scale green infrastructure project for Kansas City Overflow Control Program. There were 135 GIs constructed in Marlborough neighborhood, Kansas City. Besides watershed level sewer outflow monitoring, a rich data set was collected on six GIs. Detailed inflows, pool level, and outflows were measured over 57 rain events in a 3-year period(2012-2015). The hydrology data, together with the drainage characteristics, were included in a multiple linear regression (MLR) model after pretreatment with the Principal Component Analysis(PCA), which created scaled, independent, normalized compound variables as inputs to the MLR. The models were calibrated and verified with field data, and then extrapolated to the entire 100 aces watershed containing 135 GIs. This expanded model was compared to independent field data, and the stipulated stormwater removal target of 292,000 gal from a 1.4 inches storm. The model results indicated that the current GI design was very conservative and had exceeded the performance expectations.

BIO:                   Dr. Yanan Ma graduated from University of Missouri-Kansas City Civil Engineering program. She holds both of the Master and PhD degrees with a co-discipline in Mathematics and Statistics. Working with Dr.O’Bannon, her PhD research developed a data driven model using machine learning techniques to evaluate the current green infrastructure design results and the research findings have been published in the book Approaches to Water Sensitive Urban Design. After graduation, she joined AECOM Kansas City office and primarily work on FEMA National Flood Insurance Program. She serves as the Chairman of EWRI Kansas City Chapter 2018-2019 and ASFPM International Committee Asia subcommittee lead since 2018.
