RIASCD Whole Child School
This month's focus is "Challenged Child". Check out the PBS LearningMedia for this tenet and the breakout sessions:
In today’s highly designed world, students are surrounded by engineered artifacts. They live in a world full of the application of what they learn in science class. Incorporating the Engineering Design Process (EDP) into science curriculum makes connections in the STEM fields accessible for all students. This workshop is designed to supplement the subject area knowledge and expertise of science and math teachers by focusing on the skills needed to engineer solutions to challenges. The Engineering Design Process is based on our natural creative instincts and can easily become of all teachers’ classrooms.
This workshop will use hands-on activities to highlight the “big picture” skills of problem definition, identifying constraints and criteria, and divergent thinking processes. Optimization, systems thinking, and prototyping (convergent skills) will also be discussed. Hands-on activities that are easily translated into your classroom will be used as springboards to finding your inner engineer and to developing meaningful subject-specific applications.
