Housing Sabbath: MIC & MOC Partnership: Response to the Marin Housing Crisis

MIC & MOC are partnering to engage in a Housing Sabbath during the weekend of Sukkot from October 10th-12th, 2014 when communities of faith will open their doors to people to share the news of the importance of affordable housing from both personal and religious perspectives.

By sharing our stories, and meeting neighbors we've never met before, we can become a much more powerful force for justice.  Let us pray, study and work together to make Marin a more welcoming and inclusive community.

Housing Sabbath is rooted in the values that we share across boundaries of religion, race, ethnicity, and class.  We hold common values of shelter for all persons and respect for all neighbors - housed and unhoused - who all appreciate having a place to belong - a home.  The Housing Sabbath provides us the opportunity to reflect and act together during Sukkot to create shelter and home for all in Marin County.

We invite Marin Congregational Leaders to engage in at least one of the following Housing Sabbath actions:

  • Count - the Marin County Department of Health & Human Services request your assistance.  The week of September 29 to October 5th, you are asked to count the number of contacts with individuals/families seeking housing assistance in Marin.

  • Teach, Preach, Lead your communities in this time of Housing Sabbath, the weekend of October 10th - 12th to consider what it means to be people of faith to offer shelter, home and housing ot all in our midst.

  • Write letters during the month of October to your city council and mayor in support of a home for REST and write letters to the Marin Planning Commission in support of the Marinwood Village Project.

  • Action - Sunday, October 12th, 3 to 5pm: Join us in the Sukkah at Congregation Kol Shofar for the MOC action - Connecting REST and Housing Strategies.
