Games! Games! Games!

This pre-conference presentation will give you the opportunity to use gestures to communicate concepts, learn about and use classifiers (also known as descriptive verbs). Classifiers are signs using handshapes that are associated with specific categories (ie. size, shape, or usage). Gesture is a form of communication that does not use sign language. This presentation will help you “think out of the box” on presenting academic information using alternative methods.

Let’s challenge ourselves!

Presenters:

June Ann LeFors is an instructor and the Sign Language Studies (ASL) Director at Flagler College in Saint Augustine, Florida. She is a freelance deaf interpreter and ASL translator in the central and northeast Florida areas. She is an appointed member of the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Advisory Committee for the Florida Department of Health and serves on the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind (FSDB) Board of Trustees. A state-certified K-12 teacher, LeFors previously worked at FSDB for ten years in several roles, including as an ASL specialist and evaluator, preschool teacher in the Early Learning Center, and as a parent advisor in the Parent Infant Program. She earned her master's degree in deaf education/ deaf studies from Lamar University and a bachelor's in elementary education from Gallaudet University. She and her husband, Eric, a physical education teacher at FSDB, have six daughters - three of whom are deaf or hard of hearing.

Janelle Berry is the Bilingual (ASL) specialist at Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. She also teaches ASL classes through Outreach program and Flagler College. Berry worked at FSDB for 15 years in a variety of positions. Jobs include overnight staff, Early Learning Center and Physical Education instructional assistant, and ASL instructor for FSDB staff.
