NAPSG Foundation - Social Media & GIS

Join us for a virtual training series designed to address how public safety organizations can better integrate social media into their operations.  As more and more people turn to social media for communication, the need to integrate these data as operational layers increases.  But how do you know who to trust or when to listen to the social media conversation?  Can you engage the public to collect on the ground reports during a disaster, while also monitoring what the crowd is saying?

Learn how your GIS Platform leverages location for monitoring, visualizing and analyzing social media while also helping you engage the public for crowdsourcing reports from the field.  The public can be a force multiplier– learn how GIS can help you use them to your advantage.

Session 1: Joining the Social Conversation

Learn how your GIS Platform can easily add social media as another data layer – and not just any data, context-specific data.  Using geography and keywords, learn how to filter the social conversation into relevant streams of information using simple and focused applications.

Panelists will include:

-David Alexander, US DHS

-Ryan Lanclos, Esri

-Phil Harris, Geofeedia

-Dr. Eric Frost, Dept. of Geological Sciences, SDSU
