National Maritime Celebration:

"Treasures of the Sea"

Benefiting Camp SeaPort &

The Port Arthur International Seafarers' Center

Each year in May our country celebrates National Maritime Day. In Texas, we want to make it bigger!"

In 1933, Congress declared National Maritime Day to commemorate the American steamship Savannah’s voyage from the United States to England, marking the first successful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean with steam propulsion. During World War II more than 250,000 members of the American Merchant Marine served their country, with more than 6,700 giving their lives, hundreds being detained as prisoners of war and more than 800 U.S. merchant ships being sunk or damaged.

This event honors the past and looks to the bright future of the Maritime Industry.

With that, Camp SeaPort and the Port Arthur International Seafarers' Center cordially invite you to the Inaugural Texas - National Maritime Celebration.

The theme for the evening will be "Treasures of the Sea", celebrating the treasures these two charities bring to our region. The event raises awareness of the region's importance to state, national and global commerce.

This will be a night to honor where we have been and look to the future, learn about the state of the Sabine-Neches Waterway, and the opportunities that our Maritime Industry brings to the area. Most importantly, it is a time to celebrate the opportunities it has in store for our future workforce.

To that end, a portion of the evening's proceeds will go toward scholarships for area youth and support for the Port Arthur International Seafarers' Center.

Importance of The Event to Our Waterway

This inaugural gathering is projected to be a major event for the Sabine-Neches Waterway, and the greater Texas Gulf Coast. The Ports of the Sabine-Neches Waterway make up the 3rd largest maritime area according to tonnage. It is the Nations #1 commercial military outload port; #1 LNG exporter in the nation; #1 bulk liquid cargo waterway; #1 refiner of jet fuel in the nation and the majority of military jet fuel. It holds 55% of the nation's strategic petroleum reserves, and refines a minimum of 13% of America's daily fuel consumption. The waterway handles 100 million tons of cargo annually, and is the Center of Expertise for LNG . Additionally , the Sabine-Neches Waterway links to an extensive energy pipeline system.

Currently the Sabine-Neches Waterway is working on a deepening and widening project which will deepen the waterway from 40 feet to 48 feet.

Currently the ports and facilities of the Sabine-Neches Waterway are responsible for over 288,000 permanent jobs. Once the deepening and widening project is completed, it will create more than 176,000 NEW permanent jobs!

This celebration will enable our youth to access those jobs! It will also enable seafarers who come to the docks along the Sabine-Neches waterway, to have access to Seafarer Welfare through the Port Arthur International Seafarer's Center.
