Hosted by the Massachusetts Society for Medical Research, the New Jersey Association for Biomedical Research, and the North American 3Rs Collaborative, the 3Rs Sharing Conference VI is a one-day conference that will address the reduction of pain and distress in laboratory animal medicine in an effort to improve overall laboratory animal welfare. The conference will include presentations on key research developments, practical skills development and planning sessions to advance the alleviation of pain and distress.
The 3Rs Sharing Conference VI is designed to engage laboratory animal care staff, as well as scientists in research, development and testing, who are collectively implementing innovative strategies to move science forward.
Conference participants will be provided with:
- Evidence-based approaches that speed science and improve animal welfare;
- Alternatives and methods for the reduction, refinement and replacement of animal models in biomedical research;
- A forum where the scientific community can share best practices and challenge the status quo; and
- Guidance as to how to reframe internal and external discussions to reflect the community’s overarching commitment to implementing 3Rs principles in concert with innovative bioscience.

Agenda Highlights
Morning Session
The 3Rs Sharing Conference VI will open with a morning plenary session featuring experts in the animal care and biomedical research community, including an opening keynote presentation by Larry Carbone, DVM, PhD, DACLAM, Veterinarian & Director of the Animal Care and Use Program, University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Carbone will discuss our responsibilities to continually advance animal welfare and review our pressing needs to improve our abilities, including funding, transparency, and evidence-based best practice recommendations.
The morning session will also include a moderated panel discussion, featuring representatives from organizations and institutions from around the globe, who will discuss the latest 3Rs activities, existing limitations, and promising 3Rs developments. The morning session closing keynote will be presented by Kristin Fabre, PhD, Microphysiological Systems Development & Implementation Lead at AstraZeneca, who will share details about the latest developments regarding 3D microphysiologic systems.
Afternoon Session
Conference participants will spend the afternoon attending two distinct breakout sessions in smaller groups to help facilitate discussion and collaborative learning. Upon the conclusion of the first afternoon breakout, participants will rotate to the other breakout to allow for participation in both. On-line participants will also be able to view and participate in all afternoon workshops. The sessions will help strengthen the scientific value of the 3Rs, as well as ethical decision-making to reduce pain and distress in laboratory animals. Upon the conclusion of the breakouts, participants will return to the plenary session for a closing recap and discussion.
Breakout A:
This session will feature workshop sessions led by Dr. Larry Carbone and Melanie Graham, MPH, PhD, Associate Professor, University of Minnesota. Dr. Carbone will discuss analgesia and euthanasia guidelines and practices and their impacts on reproducibility. Dr. Graham will lead a presentation discussing practical refinement techniques for use in nonhuman primate disease models and demonstrate the value of minimizing stressors introduced by experimental design and handling to reduce confounding in sensitive models.
Breakout B:
This session will feature a workshop led by Szczepan Baran, VMD, MS, Global Head, Animal Welfare and Compliance Training at Novartis, on new technologies that allow for holistic, in-vivo monitoring of laboratory animals, which will help improve reproducibility and the refinement of existing models. This session will also feature a presentation by Michael Sidelsky, RLATG on colony health monitoring technologies utilizing exhaust air dust to help develop more accurate results, lower costs, and fewer sentinel animals.
