jessica Anderson, is an Assistant Editor at Christy Ottaviano Books, an imprint of Henry Holt Books for Young Readers/Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, features author-illustrators and encompasses literary and commercial picture books and fiction for all ages, with a focus on the middle-grade market. The imprint aims to publish books that encourage imagination and free-thinking, foster a sense of family and community, target the feelings of children, and speak directly to young people’s interests as they explore various milestones, creating contemporary classics that both challenge and entertain inquisitive readers. The imprint was founded in 2008 and publishes between 25 and 30 books a year. 

Talia Benamy, is an assistant editor at Philomel Books, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers Group. In addition to cultivating her own list, Talia works closely with two editors, focusing on everything from pictures books to middle grade and young adult novels. Authors she’s published include Chelsea Clinton, Jane Yolen, Lisa Graff, Ruta Sepetys, and Terry Border. She recently worked with Melanie Crowder on her National Jewish Book Award honoree, Audacity. Talia is actively looking for realistic and historical fiction for middle grade and young adults, as well as quality narrative nonfiction for all ages, and finding positive Jewish content for children is high on her wishlist. In addition to her life in publishing, Talia is also co-chair of the New York City chapter of J Street, the pro-Israel, pro-peace organization, and she is a member of the Council of Young Jewish Presidents as well. 

Stacey Friedberg, is an Associate Editor at Dial Books for Young Readers, where she works on everything from picture books through young adult novels. Some of the books she’s edited include the Morris Award finalist and Golden Kite Honor book The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly by Stephanie Oakes, Pilfer Academy by Lauren Magaziner, The Bone Snatcher by Charlotte Salter and We Now Return to Regular Life by Martin Wilson. Prior to working at Penguin, Stacey worked as a book reviewer at Publishers Weekly and an editorial assistant at Lightspeed Magazine. Salina Yoon is an award-winning author-illustrator of nearly two hundred books for children, including Duck, Duck, Porcupine!, the Penguin series, the Bear and Floppy series, and Be a Friend. She studied art and design at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and now lives in San Diego with her family.

Marilyn Cram Donahue is a Middle Grade/Young Adult author who lives in East Highlands, California, where her family planted orange groves in the 1850s. To date, she has published 30 books, six juvenile plays, and over 500 articles and short stories. She has also conducted over 400 workshops and seminars on writing. At present she coordinates SCBWI schmoozes in Redlands, California and speaks at schools, libraries, and conferences. Marilyn likes reading, sunsets, and taking long walks. She dislikes the telephone, thunderstorms, and people whose eyes roam when she is talking to them. If you ring her doorbell and she doesn't answer, you can usually find her working in her garden. Her latest middle grade novel When The Crickets Stopped Singing  will be out from Boyds Mills/Calkins Creek, Spring 2018.

Michael Mahin,is a children’s author, screenwriter, and self-confessed wannabe rockstar. His debut picture book, Muddy: The Story of Blues Legend Muddy Waters (Atheneum), received a starred review from Booklist. It is about the indomitable Muddy Waters, the blues music legend who’s innovative style and sound laid the musical foundation for what would become rock n’ roll. In addition to Muddy, he is also the author of the forthcoming Stalebread Charlie and the Razzy Dazzy Spasm Band (Clarion 2018), illustrated by Don Tate, and When Angels Sing: The Story of Rock Legend Carlos Santana (Atheneum 2018), illustrated by Jose Ramirez.In addition to his children’s writing, Michael is also a screenwriter. He recently signed an option on an original action-thriller he wrote which will be produced by Jon Karas, Jonathan Kim, and Michael and David Uslan’s production company, U2K Entertainment. An original horror script he wrote is also set to go into production in November 2017 and will be directed by cult-favorite Julian Richards.Michael has a Ph.D. in American Literature from Claremont Graduate University, was Pi Phi Sorority’s 2009 Professor of the Year at San Diego State University.

Free Illustrators’ Contest 

Bring your portfolio to the Illustrator’s Showcase on Saturday and our Speakers will pick their favorite portfolio! 

Free Writers’ Contest 

Send us one manuscript (attendees only) for consideration. For picture books send the complete manuscript. For middle grade and YA, send the first two chapters (limited to ten pages) and a synopsis. Please clearly mark the manuscript on the top of the first page "Contest Entry”, along with your name, address, email, phone number and type of manuscript (PB, MG, YA). There is no fee to enter. If you are sending a manuscript to be critiqued and would like to enter it in the contest as well, please send a second copy because they will go to different people. Attendees only. Writers' Contest entries must be postmarked by September 7th, 2017. Text only, no art.

Both writer's and illustrator's contests must have a minimum amount of entries for prizes to be awarded. Following the critique guidelines for formatting.

Event Details

Editor's Day is packed with plenty of opportunities for our attendees, including Manuscript Critiques, Dummy Critiques, Friday night Illustrator’s art exhibit, First Pages Panel, Portfolio Displays, Novelty Books Breakout Session, lunch with the editors and authors, Pal Book displays, book signings, and book giveaways. Don't miss out on this fabulous chance to connect with industry professionals! Lunch is included with your registration and will be provided by Alicia's Cookery & Catering Inc.

 To kick off Editors' Day this year we are calling all illustrators attending the conference to take part in our Friday night art exhibit on October 6th, 2017. See side bar for details. Pre-conference Opportunity - llustrator’s Art Exhibit (Attendees only. No guests allowed.)

Novelty/Board Book Break Out Session                                                Salina Yoon will conduct a 90 minute breakout session on crafting Novelty and Board Books. Space is limited.  

Lunch With The Editors/Authors   Drawing 10/2/17                                      At least forty winners of a random drawing will be seated at a speaker’s table for lunch! Make sure to note your main area of interest on the registration form. The lunch list will be posted at the event. All other attendees are invited to lunch at a table with one another or with the many published authors or illustrators who will be attending.

Manuscript Submission Guidelines
Please be sure to read the following very carefully before submitting your manuscript. 
1. You must register for the conference before you submit your manuscript. PRINT OUT a copy of your confirmation e-mail, or the registration page once you complete your registration, and include it with your manuscript.  
2. All manuscripts must be sent via 2 day express mail by September 30th, 2017 or
any other way to be received by 10/3/17:

Due to the number of manuscripts we receive, no in-person office drop-offs or electronic submissions will be accepted. 
3. Your manuscript must be sent by Sept 30, 2017. 
4. Format ALL manuscripts in a 12-point Times New Roman or Arial font. More formatting questions? Read From Keyboard to Printed Page www.scbwi.org. PLEASE DO NOT STAPLE YOUR PAGES. 
5. ALL submissions must include a title page with your contact information in the upper left hand corner as well as the genre of your manuscript (YA, MG, Picture Book, Chapter Book or NF. Please note, it must be only one genre, there is no MG/YA per publishing guidelines).  * The title page does NOT count as one of your ten pages.  
6. The name on your manuscript MUST match the name you registered under even if you write under a pseudonym.  
7. For Picture Books and Poetry: Submit up to TEN (10) pages of ONE picture book manuscript regardless of the page count.   No synopsis is needed.  Please do not submit a dummy book, photos, or illustrations for a manuscript critique.  
8. For Middle Grade, Young Adult, Nonfiction and Chapter books: Submit only the first TEN (10) pages, even if it cuts off mid-chapter, plus a short synopsis no longer than 250 words.  **You MUST include the synopsis or we cannot accept your submission.** 

 

Promotional Sheet Critiques

 For an additional fee of $35, (non-members $55), The National Illustrator Coordinator Priscilla Burris will critique your one-page promotional material or tear sheets or postcards. Mail a copy of your registration and your choice of promotional material. See below for mailing address. First Pages – Editor’s Panel

Does your first page work? Will it get an editor's attention? Send along a copy of the opening page of your manuscript for our First Pages Panel. Prepare the page as you would for critique submission. First Pages will be picked randomly, read out loud and critiqued by our panel of speakers. Mail 5 copies of your first page after you register. Portfolio Display

Would you like you Portfolio to be seen by our visiting Editors? Bring your portfolio to Editor's Day. We will have a table set up on the stage for you to display your work on. If you bring a dummy, please make sure to attach it to your portfolio. Please do not bring orginial art work. Copies only. Don't forget to bring your promo cards and business cards.

Published Book Showcase for PAL Members

Would you like to join our published book showcase? If you are a PAL member bring your current published children’s book (limited to one) on Saturday and you will have the opportunity to display your book at the conference. If you think you should be a PAL member log on to your membership home page at www.scbwi.org and follow the guidelines to update your status to PAL.  Attendees only.
