The Maryland/DC Association for Play Therapy Presents:  Cross-Cultural Competency & Efficacy in Play Therapy  

Presenter: Xanthia Johnson, LPC, LCPC, ACS, RPT-S

As a female play therapist of color, Xanthia Johnson has over a decade of cross-cultural experience providing play therapy to urban children & families in Washington, DC. Her private psychotherapy practice, Urban Playology, is located in the quaint bustling borough of DuPont Circle. Ms. Johnson’s practice is home to a diverse casload of clients (including LGBTQ folk and people of color) and clinical supervisees, who yearn to grow in the areas of cultural self-compassion and cultural competency. Ms. Johnson’s relational approach supports clients and supervisses in their exploration of diversity, multicultural boundaries, and transferential dynamics. Cultivation of upcoming retreats for professional female clients of color and urban play therapists are among Ms. Johnson’s current projects!

Workshop Overview: Cross cultural issues emerge during play therapy treatment all the time! These experiences can be subtle or overt in nature. This workshop provides play therapists from all walks of life the opportunity to explore cross cultural issues in play therapy. Through review of relevant research and real-life scenarios, participants will learn how best to address cross-cultural issues in play therapy. Mindful awareness and enhanced cross-cultural play therapy skills will be among the primary takeaways. Participants should be prepared to interactively engage, to personally reflect, and play throughout this multi-modal play therapy training!

Learning Objectives: 

Following the training, participants will be able to:

1. Within the context of play therapy, establish a working definition of cross-cultural competence. 

 2. Supportively explore transferrence & countertransferrence beliefs and values that impact one’s play therapy practice.

 3. Identify ten characteristics of cross-culturally competent play therapists.

 4. Through the use of three psycho-dramatic and integrative play therapy tecniques, participants will further  enhance their cross-cultural play therapy skills.
