We will explore how trauma, abuse, and neglect impact the bonds of attachment within the family system and how the power of using attachment-based play therapy activities and interventions can help build and foster healthy relationships between child-parent. Child Survivors of a Loved One's Suicide: Helping them Thrive through Play Therapy
Descripton:
Child survivors of a loved one’s suicide have historically been overlooked as a special population in treatment. For each of the over 43,000 plus people who die yearly from suicide, there are over 6 to 8 bereaved survivors. Of those survivors, over 60,000 are children. Often the adults responsible for their care are emotionally distracted with their own reactions to the loved one’s suicide and as such can struggle to competently and objectively meet the needs of the children. Current research demonstrates that child survivors benefit from therapy interventions. As such, child play therapists are in a unique position to provide time sensitive, developmentally appropriate, play therapy to support/understand/treat the child’s reaction their loss. Suicide is often difficult to comprehend as adults. It is understandable that it would be equally or more complicated for the children survivors.
