 Jack David, Publisher, ECW Press

Jack David is the publisher of ECW Press, which has been recognized by Publishers Weekly as one of the most diversified independent publishers in North America. ECW Press has published close to 1,000 books that are distributed throughout the English-speaking world and translated into dozens of languages.

In the next year ECW will release 50 new titles and will continue to support and promote a vibrant backlist that includes poetry and fiction, pop-culture and political analysis, sports books, biography, and travel guides.

Derek Finkle, Agent, Publisher and Founder of the Canadian Writers Group

Finkle attended Princeton University, where he studied creative writing under Paul Auster and Russell Banks. He began his career at Toronto Life magazine and went on to be a regular contributor to Saturday Night magazine and The Globe and Mail, among other publications. His first book, No Claim to Mercy, published in 1998, won the Crime Writers’ Arthur Ellis Award for best non-fiction and was named a Notable Book of the Year by The Globe and Mail. 

From 2002 to 2007, he was the editor of Toro magazine, which garnered more than sixty National Magazine Award nominations. One of Finkle's stories won gold for investigative reporting in 2005.

In 2009, Finkle founded the Canadian Writers Group, a literary agency, which has recently started publishing non-fiction e-books, including top sellers such as Finding Karla and Deborah Coyne’s memoirs.

James FitzGerald, Author

James FitzGerald is a Toronto-born journalist and author. His first book, Old Boys: The Powerful Legacy of Upper Canada College, was a controversial inside look at the attitudes and values of English Canada’s ruling class families. Revelations of the sexual abuse of boys at the school, first published in the book in 1994, sparked the conviction of three former teachers and a successful multi-million-dollar class action suit against UCC. 

FitzGerald’s latest book, What Disturbs Our Blood: A Son’s Quest to Redeem the Past, a multi-layered exploration of madness and high achievement in his prominent Toronto medical family, won the 2010 Writers’ Trust Prize For Non-Fiction. The Globe and Mail wrote: “A memoir of extraordinary power and candour…as riveting as a crime thriller.” Filmmaker David Cronenberg said: “What Disturbs Our Blood disturbed my blood…I found potent resonances on every page.”

 

Hilary McMahon, Literary Agent, Westwood Creative Artists

A literary agent at Westwood Creative Artists, Canada’s largest literary agency, Hilary McMahon represents a diverse list of fiction, non-fiction and children’s authors, including John Bemrose, Lewis DeSoto, Charlotte Gray, Eric Hill (creator of the Spot books), Richard Gwyn, Pauline Holdstock, Malalai Joya, Susan Juby, Dennis Lee, Susin Nielsen, John Lawrence Reynolds, Thomas Trofimuk, Michael Turner and Lucy Waverman.

McMahon has been at WCA for more than 15 years and is a shareholder in the company.
