Pitch Perfect: Learn What Editors Like (and Don't Like)
Registration Now Open
If you pitch stories to magazines or would like to start, join us for a workshop on preparing strong query letters.
Our panel of experienced magazine editors will show you the ingredients of a killer query letter, share examples of successful pitches and answer your questions about the writer-editor relationship.
PWAC Toronto usually offers a seminar on pitching once a year and it's always a hit with new and established writers. You won't want to miss this.
Learn the dos and don'ts from the pros and get an opportunity to meet the editors.
Meet our panel:
Peter Carter is editor of Today’s Trucking, one of Canada’s most reputable and readable business-to-business magazines. Peter has worked as a magazine editor in Canada for longer than he cares to admit, at—among other titles—Chatelaine, The Financial Post and City Dog. He says working with capable freelancers is one of the things he loves most about his work. “Not only do I get to deal with all the clever writers,” he says, “but the better the freelancers’ work, the less work there is for me to do!” His blog, “Pete’s Blog&Grille,” was named Best Business Blog in Canada at the 2014 Canadian Online Publishing Awards. Starting out on what was supposed to be a three-month fact-checking contract, Maureen Halushak has spent the past decade working at Rogers Media on the Chatelaine, Glow and FLARE brands. She’s currently deputy editor at FLARE, where she oversees the features department. Her advice related to pitching can be summed up in three words—“Keep It Short”—but she will expand upon this on May 28. Twitter: @maureenhalushak
Lauren McKeon has been the editor of Canada’s progressive, independent This Magazine since December 2011. Before that, she worked as a reporter, editor and writer in the North for several years, living in Yellowknife and travelling Canada’s territories and northern Alberta to write about everything from prisons to the Peel Valley. Her work has most recently appeared in Toronto Life, Flare and The Walrus. Twitter: @mckeonlauren
