Dan Heims - Author and president of Terra Nova Nurseries, Inc. in Canby, OR Garden Gems - Dan has been exposed to more plants, in more places “than your average bear”. This talk is a fun compilation of some of the newest, most exciting perennials, tropicals, and woodies seen today. Dan pulls together these plants from world-wide trips, botanical gardens, plant shows, and nurseries. Satisfy the plant geek within!
New Perennials from Around the World - How new plants are found. Join Dan on a whirlwind tour of ten horticultural countries (Japan, China, Germany, Tasmania, Australia, US, Holland, England, Ireland & New Zealand). Meet the movers and shakers in each country, and the plants they love. Focus will be primarily on hardy perennials but exceptional “temperennials” will also be shown. Tips will be given on how to get plants into the US legally.
Peter Hatch - retired Director of Gardens and Grounds at Monticello Thomas Jefferson’s Favorite Garden Plants - Thomas Jefferson wrote that “the greatest service which can be rendered any country is to add a useful plant to its culture” and he attempted to do just that at Monticello. Jefferson himself was a seedy missionary of new and unusual novelties, and his legacy in food, wine, and gardening provides us today with a profound model in vegetable cuisine, sustainable horticulture, and a passion for the earth. In this lecture, Jefferson’s favorite fruits, vegetables, trees, shrubs, and flowers will be examined by discussing how they were grown and prepared at Monticello, their history and place in the horticultural world of early nineteenth-century Virginia and how that legacy is still influencing food and gardening today. Peter will also share his techniques to grow and prepare these treasured gems for today’s modern garden.
Pam Baggett - Author and previous owner of Singing Spring Nursery Cultivating the Garden Artist Within - Imagine the possibilities for our gardens if we could train ourselves to see the world through an artist's eyes. The gardener's palette would then expand to include not just dirt and plants but everything around us, because whether we're at our favorite nursery or trapped in the grocery check-out line, we can be teaching ourselves to be better garden designers. In this lecture, we'll discuss tools to sharpen our observational skills so we can utilize the finest details of plant texture and color. We'll study several paintings to learn design lessons we can apply to our gardens. We'll also explore the emotional impact of those paintings, analyzing how visual artists working in another media achieve their desired effects. We'll discover ways to translate the oversized displays we see at public gardens into beautiful home designs. Finally, we'll consider what it takes to be a creator, including techniques for tuning out our critical internal editors long enough to let us explore self-expression.
Bryce Lane - Professor at NCSU and host of an Emmy winning TV show Beautiful Bushes: Super Shrubs for the Landscape - When it comes to choosing plants for a landscape, trees and herbaceous perennials get all the attention. Any landscape would be incomplete without woody shrubs. Shrubs provide additional color, texture and function to all kinds of gardens. The selection of native, naturalized and "friendly" exotic shrubs is immense. This talk will identify some of the best shrubs for the landscape garden and show how they can be used with many other kinds of plants.
Dan Heims has been deeply involved in all facets of horticulture. since 1973. He’s currently the president of Terra Nova Nurseries, Inc. in Canby, OR - a company noted for countless new perennial introductions. Dan’s articles and photography have been featured in numerous magazines. He has taught horticulture courses, wholesaled exotic plants, hosted a weekly gardening show on radio and run his own landscape design / build business. Dan and his garden have appeared on Martha Stewart’s TV Show, HGTV, British television (BBC), USA Today, Forbes, Better Homes and Gardens, Sunset Magazine, and Organic Gardening.
His job description dictates that he must “travel the world and seek the newest perennials”. Terra Nova’s breeding programs have produced many international gold and silver medal winners and an astounding 700 new plants. Dan uses his unique blend of knowledge and humor as he speaks around the United States, in Japan, England, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Tasmania, Australia, and Canada.

Peter Hatch is the retired Director of Gardens and Grounds at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's historic home in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was responsible for the restoration, maintenance and interpretation of the 2,400-acre site, including the landscaping, vegetable gardens, vineyard and orchards, since 1977. He also oversaw numerous educational programs, including the Garden Tours (for 35,000 annual visitors); the Saturdays in the Garden program of natural history walks, lectures, and horticultural workshops; the Historic Landscape Institute, a two week field school for students from around the nation; and the Evening Conversations series which honors the legacy of Thomas Jefferson with after-hours symposia on a variety of topics.
Hatch is currently an advisor for First Lady Michelle Obama's White House kitchen garden, providing many heirloom plants for the project.
He has written extensively on Jefferson's gardens and lectured in thirty-five states, on Jefferson and the history of garden plants. He is the author of The Gardens of Monticello and The Fruits and Fruit Trees of Monticello: Thomas Jefferson and the Origins of American Horticulture, the editor of Thomas Jefferson’s Flower Garden at Monticello. His most recent book, A Rich Spot of Earth: Thomas Jefferson's Revolutionary Garden at Monticello, focuses on the restoration, American characteristics, and legacy of Monticello's vegetable garden. Pam Baggett is a freelance writer, photographer, and previous owner of Singing Springs Nursery in Cedar Grove, NC, a nationally-known mail-order nursery specializing in tender and hardy tropical plants. Pam studied agriculture at North Carolina State University before apprenticing on the Farm and Garden program at the University of California at Santa Cruz. She served for six years as the volunteer curator for the entrance garden at the JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, NC. She now pursues a calmer life, writing poetry in her free time and teaching writing classes to adults.
A member of the Garden Writers Association, she was awarded a Quill & Trowel Award in 2000 and has written articles in publications including Fine Gardening, Horticulture and The American Gardener. She is the author/photographer of ¡Tropicalismo! Spice Up Your Garden with Cannas, Bananas, and 93 Other Eye-Catching Tropical Plants, now out by Timber Press, www.timberpress.com.
Bryce Lane is a dynamic speaker who hosts the Emmy-winning show “In the Garden with Bryce Lane” on UNC TV. He is a national award-winning instructor in the Department of Horticultural Science at N.C. State University. A perennially popular teacher, Lane has earned the university's Outstanding Teacher Award three times.
He's been with N.C. State University's College of Agriculture and Life Science since 1981. In 1987, he was named the department's undergraduate coordinator, responsible for day-to-day operation of the two-year and four-year academic programs. From 1997 to 1999, he served as interim director of the JC Raulston Arboretum.
Lane is no stranger to TV: Several of his classes have been used as video courses through the university's distance education program and many have appeared on Raleigh cable channel 18. Bryce regularly teaches Home Horticulture, Principles of Horticulture, Interior Plantscapes, Perspectives in Horticulture and Garden Center Operations. Bryce received a bachelor's degree in plant and soil science from the University of Massachusetts and a master's degree in ornamental horticulture from The Ohio State University.
