EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS

Attend one or more of the educational presentations offered throughout the day to learn how precast concrete can benefit your next project. Each presentation qualifies for AIA 1.0 HSW/LU, 1.0 PDH, 1.0 CEU. All presentations will be located at the Wells Concrete Rosemount office (1333 158th St. W, Rosemount, MN 55068).  Registration is limited to only 20 attendees, once full, guests will be added to a wait list.

8:00 AM - 9:00 AM Precast 101
Participants will explore building design solutions using precast and prestressed concrete products. They will learn what precast, prestressed concrete products are, how they are manufactured, including structural theory of prestressing, and quality assurance procedures. Attendees will learn about the industry certification program (PCI) of plants, people and performance and explore numerous examples of architectural and structural concrete solutions for numerous building markets. They will explore a variety of architectural finishes and how each is created in terms of color, form and texture in addition to the common structural solutions using prestressed concrete products and explore integrated solutions; realizing the full potential of loadbearing architectural precast units. The session will end with an overview of industry support available to the design community, including published and electronic media and a question and answer session.   Presenters: Jace Rossow and Scott Monzelowsky

9:15 AM - 10:15 AM What's New in Architectural Precast
Whatever your mind imagines, you can recreate it in precast concrete to make a stunning, iconic façade. The clearest advantage of architectural precast is found in the virtually limitless design potential that can be achieved with its use. Participants will learn how architectural precast concrete has quietly revolutionized the construction industry by creating a dramatic range of functionality and creative expression. Precast concrete provides incredible aesthetic versatility from providing multiple colors and textures, to developing shapes, forms and very ornate details.

This presentation will discuss some new architectural finishes and features we incorporating into our projects or researching for future projects, such as polishing, graphic concrete, terracotta, limestone and more.  In addition, a brief overview of the many standard finishes and features available with precast concrete will be discussed and the benefits to combining multiple finishes into single panels, embedded materials, selection of mix designs, approaches to achieving colors, proper specification, and procedures to ensure expectations are aligned.  Presenters: Art Mccaw with guests Ben Dalsing and Tim Edland

10:30 AM - 11:30 AM Precast Concrete Solutions - Community Storm Shelters
Ever wondered what the terms “near-absolute protection” and “community shelters” have in common?  Interested in understanding how the federal government defines “safe room” versus “shelter”?  If so, attend a discussion on the design and construction of community and residential safe rooms built to provide protection during tornado and hurricane events. The presentation will cover information on FEMA - 361 guidelines while exploring available design and construction options to assist communities during natural disasters. Information will also reflect post-damage assessments and lessons learned, including those based on many safe rooms directly impacted by tornadoes. Presenters Curt Gear and guest speaker Denise Guzzetta from BASF. 

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Precast for Parking Ramps
Parking structures have changed a lot over the past decade. Today’s parking structures have to be built sustainably, reduce operational and maintenance costs, last longer, and have more stringent aesthetic requirements. In many cases, they have to be high performance structures exceeding standard expectations.

This presentation will explain the benefits of a precast concrete parking structure including how to design and build them utilizing high performance precast concrete. The latest innovations and design methodologies, including connections, proper detailing and maintenance will be discussed. Aesthetic options and versatility will also be presented.  Presenters: Mat Boie

1:15 PM - 2:15 PM Emerging Trends in Precast Concrete
New advancements in precast concrete products are completely changing the design and construction worlds. Wells concrete continues to advance its research and develop efforts to create new and enhanced building efficiencies for our clients.

During this presentation, participants will learn about some of these emerging trends including 3D printing, lightweight wall panels, preinstalled windows, decorate concrete, screen walls …what else? Imagine the possibilities! Attendees will learn how new technologies are changing the way we build and what we build with precast concrete.  Presenters: Gary Pooley and Mat Boie with guests Ben Dalsing and Tim Edland

2:30 PM - 3:30 PM Precast for Municipal and Civil Buildings
Municipal buildings are often community showpieces. Precast concrete allows them to stand the test of time. Precast lets architects and engineers integrate structural and architectural elements, which reduces materials, time and costs. Precast concrete is a very durable, low-maintenance building material designed to last 100 years.

The presentation guides the audience through the various benefits of using precast for municipal and civil buildings, discussing its strength, resiliency, and low life-cycle costs.  The advantages and long-term benefits for Community Centers, Fire Stations, Government & Public, Justice & Correctional, Maintenance Facilities, Religious Facilities, and Water & Wastewater Treatment Plants will be covered. 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM Wells Tours
Plant Tour: Attendees will observe firsthand how designs and engineering details are executed in the precast manufacturing process. They will also observe the entire precast and prestressed manufacturing process from engineering and connections, forms setup, and casting. Attendees will gain a better understanding of precast and prestressed capabilities and related quality issues while learning how precast fits within the entire building system and how to design with precast concrete accurately and safely.  

Mock-up Sample Building Tour: Attendees receive a guided tour of a 30’x10’ building that displays various finishes and features capabilities. The building is fully enclosed and comprised of eight different wall panels illustrating unique architectural finishes and features. Interior structural details include detailing for three common roofing systems: double tee roof members, bar joist roofing systems, and hollowcore roofing systems. Another exciting feature on display is the newly introduced preinstalled Integrity Windows by Marvin.
