TOPIC:  Applied Experimental Research in Structural Engineering

DESCRIPTION:

Dr. David Dinehart, Professor will present challenges, benefits, and outcomes of conducting large scale experimental structural research.  Case studies to be reviewed include load to failure tests of open web steel joists, composite floor systems, fatigue tests of concrete bridge decks reinforced with steel and GFRP, and dynamic tests of wood frame shear walls and cellular beam moment connections.  Experimental outcomes and lessons learned will be presented. He has promised not to include any equations.

 PRESENTER:

Dr. David Dinehart currently serves as the Chairman of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Villanova University.  He has a technical expertise in the fields of structural dynamics, the behavior of cellular and castellated beams, application of supplemental damping to lateral load resisting systems, and engineering education.  Dr. Dinehart has been a professor at Villanova University for 16 years where he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses related to structural engineering. He is a two time recipient of the College of Engineering Farrell Award for outstanding service and a three time nominee for the Villanova University Lindback Award for teaching excellence.   Dr. Dinehart earned his  BS and MS in Civil Engineering at Bucknell University in 1990 and 1991 respectively.  He worked as a structural engineer designing power facilities for Bechtel for three years before matriculating at the University of Delaware, where he earned his PhD in Civil Engineering in 1998.  Dr. Dinehart currently serves on the boards of the Delaware Valley Association of Structural Engineers, Amigos de Jesus, Bucknell University's Department of Civil Engineering, and Villanova University's Center for Global Health.
