Heat-Straightening of Riveted Built-up Steel Bridge Girders

DESCRIPTION:

Heat -straightening a steel bridge girder is an economical and relatively quick way to repair impact damage.  However, built-up I-girders can pose challenges in successfully bringing the girder back to its original shape.  This presentation highlights a successful heat-straightening repair of a riveted built-up I-girder with two cover plates.  Repair calculations, restraining force estimation, and steel repairs for this project as well as recommendations for other similar repairs will be discussed. Earn 1 professional development hour (PDH).

PRESENTER:

MICHAEL URBAN, PE

Michael Urban, PE is a Structural Engineer for Gannett Fleming in Valley Forge, PA.  Mr. Urban earned a dual Bachelor's degree in Architectural and Civil Engineering from Drexel University and a Master's degree in Civil Engineering from Lehigh University.  Mr. Urban has conducted extensive research on the evaluation, heat-straightening repair, and testing of severely damaged steel girders through the NCHRP project titled "Heat-Straightening Repair of Damaged Steel Bridge Girders: Fatigue and Fracture Performance".  He has several published papers on various heat-straightening topics.  His heat-straightening experience also includes developing and reviewing specifications and procedures for state agencies and contractors.
