Understanding Sexuality in Couples Therapy

Couples who we see to talk about their relationships are also often struggling with their relational and personal sexuality. Sex therapy training is often absent in a therapist’s education. Although this presentation will not substitute for the extensive training required to be a sex therapist, it will introduce concepts and ways of operating that will be helpful when working with intimate relationships. Desire discrepancies, the role of masturbation and pornography, the use of erotic fantasy, and the fear of sexual pleasure will be some of the topics that will be introduced in this day long examination of sexuality and couples therapy. Multiple case studies will be provided throughout the course. At the end of this day, therapists will be a lot more comfortable talking about sex and intimacy.

Presenter Biography

Stephen Duclos, LMFT, CST, has been working with families and couples since 1973 in a number of settings, including working with families around aspects of disability. He is an adjunct faculty member at UMass-Boston in the Graduate School of Counseling, teaching ethics, aspects of family therapy, and sexuality. He also consults about sexual health at Harvard Medical School. At South Shore Sexual Health Center in Quincy, Duclos is a primary faculty member in the training of therapists to become nationally certified as Sex Therapists, an 18-month process. His clinical practice also includes supervision across the spectrum of family, couples, and sex therapy, often at a national level. Winner of the Patricia Schiller Prize in 2012 for his work on fathers, daughters, and sexuality, Duclos presents at a number of conferences each year.
