Exploring the Small and Significant with Atom Probe Tomography

Our October Presentation: The development of new materials increasingly focuses on manipulating the nano-structure to tailor macro-scale properties. However, the ability to measure and understand fine-scale composition is challenging with only limited tools available. The atom probe is one tool that is being used for a wide range of applications, including engineering metal alloys and semiconductor devices. This talk will review the atom probe tomography instrument, as well as its history. We'll explore some atom probe tomography applications, including high temperature ferritic alloys for advanced fission and fusion applications. Sample "atom maps" appear below:Atom Maps

Our Speaker: Dr. Nicholas Cunningham is the owner of Nyler Research LLC, an atom probe tomography services company. He completed his PhD from UCSB in mechanical engineering and earned a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Idaho. Between degrees, Nicholas worked as a design engineer for a small company, building infrared interferometers and related instruments. In addition to basic materials research, he enjoys investigating challenges facing the energy and transportation fields, including a transportation project restoring an old Ford Mustang fastback that was given to him after rotting in a field for 20 years.

This meeting is sponsored in part by Reicker, Pfau, Pyle and McRoy, attorneys
