3D MEMS Photonic Optical Circuit Switching: Growing Use in Cloud Data Centers

Our June Presentation: 3D MEMS Optical Circuit Switching technology first came of age in the early 2000s during the boom in Telecom fiber-optic networks, but its early promise was unrealized due to the ending of that growth cycle. In the last three years, the winds have changed and 3D-MEMS is enjoying rapid deployment and growth in web scale data centers and wide area networks. Based in Santa Barbara, CALIENT is the market leader in this innovative technology, which has its origins in research work at UCSB and Cornell.

The presentation will provide a detailed overview of 3D-MEMS technology and its interesting development history, together with an explanation of the data center applications that are behind its recent market growth.

One of the most recent and powerful applications is in large web scale Data Centers in which poor compute resource utilization is a primary source of waste and inefficiency. These data centers often use less than 40 percent of their available computing cycles, and yet compute resources represent 85% of the electronics cost in a data center. A new virtual POD (V-POD) data center architecture, enabled by Optical Circuit Switching, delivers significant improvements in operational efficiency by improving the utilization of server and storage resources. This reduces the need for further investments in computing resources.

Our Speaker: Gregory Koss has over 25 years of experience at software, wireless, and networking companies. He's held titles including Executive Chairman, CEO, Chief Development Officer, Senior VP, and Senior Advisor. In addition to his current position at CALIENT Technologies, he's worked for Shocase (a social networking start-up), BTI Systems, SavaJe Technologies, Reef Point Systems, Ciena Corporation, Internet Photonics, Nortel Networks, Sonoma Systems, Andrew Corporation (CommScope), CrossComm Corporation, Analog Devices, Inc., WRC, Inc., and Fibronics International. Koss has a BS in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He moved to Santa Barbara from Boston in 2010.
