Most often, the social worker is the front line mental health provider with patients experiencing a wide variety of chronic and acute mental health issues. It is important that the social worker have an understanding of current medications used to treat mental health issues. Patients often discuss their medication concerns with their social worker, thus it is important that the social worker have an understanding of psychotropics at a foundational level. Additionally, social workers are often the referral source for psychotropic medication management and benefit from additional education regarding when referral to a psychiatric prescriber is indicated.
This presentation will provide the participant with an overview of current psychiatric medication treatments for a variety of mental health concerns including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, substance use disorders and personality disorders. As a social worker and prescriber, the presenter will offer a unique perspectives to the social worker desiring an understanding of commonly used medications as well as potential side effects and treatment implications for both chronic and acute mental health concerns. The participant will understand when referral for psychiatric care is indicated and also better understand how to facilitate collaboration with between social work and psychiatry.

Presenter: Dr. Justin R. White
Dr. Justin White is a board certified family psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and licensed independent (clinical) social worker. He is currently an Assistant Professor of nursing at The University of Alabama and maintains active clinical practice in New Mexico providing evaluation, psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic management of patients with psychiatric issues of all ages. He was a Hartford Foundation scholar at the University of Utah and earned a certificate in gerontology. His research has focused on understanding barriers to mental health care and integration of mental health care with primary care. Dr. White has extensive clinical experience in the practice of clinical social work and advanced psychiatric nursing with the child, adolescent, adult and geriatric population in correctional/forensic settings, long term care facilities, medical/psychiatric facilities and emergency departments.
