Special Education Health and Wellness: Access to School Social Work Related Services
This presentation is designed to explore and analyze the effects of systemic/internalized oppression within the New Mexico educational system, emphasizing Special Education and Related Services. We will explore the development of a more open and inclusive educational system through an awareness of oppression and present day challenges regarding our public education system. We will take a look at the historical “school to prison” pipeline and its evolutionary effect on people of color and other marginalized individuals. Topics include a historical view of the educational system in America, the 504 Plan, IDEA, IEP’s and Related Services within our current educational systems. Additionally, we will explore the need for Special Education Services and Related Service supports with a brief overview of Federal, State, and Local New Mexico Children’s Code laws and regulations, through the lens of a School Social Worker.
