Spanish Speaking Social Workers: Client's needs, worker's proficiency and the need for training and certification
Spanish Speaking Social Workers: Client’s needs, worker’s proficiency and the need for training and certification will address some of the most salient issues around the provision of social work services in Spanish. New Mexico has a large Spanish speaking population, and social work services should be accessible to language minority clients. To empower resiliency, and advance the human rights of non-English speaking clients, we need to increase our understanding of the needs of clients, as well as the needs of bilingual social workers who are trying to meet this need.
Trabajadores sociales que hablan español: Las necesidades del cliente, la competencia del trabajador y la necesidad de capacitación y certificación abordará algunos de los problemas más destacados relacionados con la prestación de servicios de trabajo social en español. En Nuevo México tenemos un alto porcentaje de personas que solo hablan español y los servicios de trabajo social deben ser accesibles para clientes de minoritarios. Para potenciar la resiliencia y promover los derechos humanos de los clientes que no hablan inglés, debemos aumentar nuestra comprensión de las necesidades de los clientes, así como las necesidades de los trabajadores sociales bilingües que intentan satisfacer esta necesidad.Presented by:

Maria Ortiz Bustos, LMSW, has been a College Professor since 2008 and started teaching a Spanish seminar in 2009 as part of a grant project that was aimed at increasing the number of bilingual social workers in the child welfare system. She has taught a Spanish seminar for bilingual students every year in an effort to meet the needs of Spanish speaking clients.
Kimberly Anguiano, BSW, works for the State of New Mexico through the Substitute Care Advisory Council. A New Mexico State University graduate, the Bachelor of Social Work Spanish seminar provided Kimberly with a linguistic and cultural understanding of working with Spanish speaking clients along the borderland.
Christal Tucker, BSW, is an advanced standing Master of Social Work student at New Mexico State University. She often used her bilingual skills in the undergraduate field practicum and will continue using her Spanish speaking skills with clients as a student intern at the El Paso Child Guidance Center.
