Introducing the Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow
Barton is proud to partner with BUILD NYC, a national nonprofit organization committed to educating the next generation of entrepreneurs through experiential learning and soft skills development. BUILD CEO Ayele Shakur will discuss how entrepreneurship can act as a launch pad for success and how giving back in even small ways can have resounding effects in a community. BUILD NYC alum Aury Fernandez will also have the opportunity to interview entrepreneur Michael Katz of mParticle (a key tech partner for NBCU’s customer data platform) to discuss what the process is like for taking a business from successful start-up to IPO to sale.
Ayele Shakur is the CEO of BUILD.org and brings three decades of experience as an innovator in urban education. Before becoming CEO, Ayele served as the founding Regional Executive Director for BUILD Boston for seven years. Prior to BUILD, she was President and CEO of the Boston Learning Center. A veteran classroom teacher, Ayele taught for eleven years in the Los Angeles area and in the Boston Public Schools, and co-authored the book Boost School Performance – A Parent’s Guide to Better Grades Fast. Ayele is the recipient of the 2012 Boston Celtics Heroes Among Us Award and the 2007 Boston Children’s Museum’s Great Friend to Kids Award. From 2014-16, she served as Chairwoman for the Boston NAACP Education Committee. She is a 2017 Barr Fellow, a distinguished group of outstanding nonprofit leaders in Boston, and in 2018 became part of the GK100 Most Influential Black Bostonians. From 2015 to present, she has co-chaired the Opportunity and Achievement Gaps Task Force for the Boston Public Schools, which is an appointment by the Boston School Committee. She also serves as an advisor to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Equitable Futures Initiative.

Michael Katz is Co-Founder and CEO of mParticle, the leading customer data platform helping the world’s best brands unify data across all consumer touch points to optimize marketing outcomes and CX, and a key tech partner for NBCU’s customer data platform across multiple businesses. Mike was Founder and CEO of interclick, took it public in 2009, and sold to Yahoo in 2011 for $270M. Mike is a Techstars mentor providing entrepreneurial advice, industry-specific knowledge, and personal connections that help entrepreneurs succeed.
