Design Tour: West Berkeley’s Urban Fabric

The Fourth Street corridor of West Berkeley is a fascinating study of urban fabric. From beloved, historic businesses to elaborate, new mixed-use buildings and from difficult moments created by highway overcrossings to delightful pocket gardens and sculptures—West Berkeley has a character all of its own. Local architect David Trachtenberg shares the process of designing for West Berkeley through a tour of recent and future projects. All are encouraged to gather after the tour at Brennan’s Restaurant for a group lunch.

On this tour we’ll be looking at the elaborate new mixed-used Read Building and the in-development ProVen Building, an ink factory soon to be transformed into office space and a private art gallery.

  • “Endless Canvass” aka TheProVen Building, 1350 4th Street, Berkeley, CA. The ProVen will be an adaptive re-use of an existing ink factory into offices and a private art gallery. This project is currently in the design stage with limited access to the interior, however the exterior is fascinating and a site for ‘Endless Canvass’ – a magnet for Bay Area graffiti artists.
  • The Read Building, 2025 4th Street, Berkeley, CA. The Read is a new mixed use building containing business and philanthropic offices for the Read Family, their private car museum, other retail and the Sierra Nevada Torpedo tasting room.
