Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and End of Life Care
dementia. People with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) and their families face numerous
challenges in finding appropriate and necessary medical and supportive care. As both the number of people
with ADRD and the associated costs are projected to more than double within the next 30 years, there is a great need to insure that health care professionals are well trained to provide appropriate and competent direct care and support. In this interdisciplinary workshop, healthcare professionals will enhance their knowledge and skills in the areas of pathophysiology, assessment and evaluation of ADRD, and end of life care.
This is a free interdisciplinary continuing education program designed for primary care providers, including physicians, physican assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and pharmacists. Pre-registration is required.
Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
1. Identify pathophysiologic changes leading to the development of Alzheimer’s disease
2. Describe research options for treatment and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease
3. Utilize laboratory tests and tools for evaluation of cognitive funtion and its progression in the clinical setting
4. Summarize key components of end of life care for clients with dementia and their families

Chief, Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, RWMC; Clinical Associate Professor, URI College of Nursing; Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, Boston University; RIGEC faculty
Dr. Stoukides lectures regularly to medical residents, physicians, and health professionals from various disciplines. He has extensive clinical and research experience, particularly in the area of pharmacology and Alzheimer’s disease. He is board certified in internal medicine and focuses exclusively on the care of older adults.
Betsy Moody, MD
Medical Director, Linden Ponds, Erickson Living, Hingham, MA, Board of Trustees, Alzheimer’s Association of Rhode Island
Dr. Moody is a geriatrician with broad experience in the care of the elderly and particularly those with dementia throughout the continuum of care, from outpatient office care to hospital and nursing home care. She teaches residents in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics.
Jennifer Ritzau, MD
Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, Hospice and Palliative Medicine; Associate Medical Director, Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island
Dr. Ritzau is the associate medical director at Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island. Dr. Ritzau provides hospice and palliative care to residents in long-term care facilities as well as inpatient palliative care consults at Rhode Island Hospital.
Continuing Education (CE/CME): Participants must sign in/out and complete the program evaluation and pre- and post-tests. Participants must attend the entire program in order to receive CE contact hours in nursing and pharmacy.
Medicine: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essentials and Standards of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of Roger Williams Medical Center and the Rhode Island Geriatric Education Center. Roger Williams Medical Center is accredited by the Rhode Island Medical Society to sponsor intrastate continuing medical education for physicians. Roger Williams Medical Center designates the educational activity for a maximum of 2.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Pharmacy: The University of Rhode Island, College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council on Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This is a knowledge type of activity. Attendance and completion of evaluation forms and self-assessment tools at the conclusion of this program are required for issuance of a statement of credit. Participants will receive 2.75 contacts hours (0.275 CEU). The UAN is 0060-9999-13-034-L01-P.
Nursing: This activity has been submitted to the Rhode Island State Nurses Association for approval to award contact hours. The Rhode Island State Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
