Advice is for Winners

Advice is for Winners: How to Get Advice for Better Decisions in Life and Work

People often make inferior decisions, avoidably, because they don't proactively seek advice from others or don't do it well. This is specially relevant to small businesses, which lack bench strength and the cash to pay consultants. To improve the chances of making good decisions, entrepreneurs should draw informally
on others' knowledge, by their own initiative. I'll discuss obstacles, advice's benefits (more than just solutions), and good practices.

Raul Valdes-Perez co-founded the business software company Vivisimo in 2000 and led it as CEO and chairman through 2009, then became executive chairman until the acquisition by IBM in 2012.
He was a 2007 E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year, North Central Region. Earlier, he was on the Carnegie Mellon computer science faculty. He has received seven research grants from the National Science Foundation and published 50 journal articles and book chapters in computer, natural, and social science. He received a 1991 PhD in computer science from Carnegie Mellon, where his advisor was the Nobel Laureate Herbert A. Simon. He is the author of Advice is for Winners.
