3rd Annual National Muslim Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill 

The US Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO) is excited to annouce the hosting of the third annual National Muslim Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., from May 1st and 2nd, 2017.

USCMO invites participants from all national, state and local Muslim organizations, mosques and community groups to join this important event.

Expected to draw hundreds of Muslim delegates from across the nation like in previous years, this two-day event is open to representatives of all national, state and local Muslim organizations and communities.

The event is designed to connect national, regional and state Muslim organizations, community members with their elected representatives in Congress.

USCMO’S Advocacy day will focus on promoting a legislative agenda in support of equality and social justice issues that will be of benefit to all Americans, regardless of faith or background. 

Some of these issues include:

• A round up endorsement of all anti-Muslim ban, religious questioning and registry legislation

• Supporting DREAMers and raising concerns about the Secure Communities program’s impact on civil liberties and immigrant communities

• Endorsing the End Racial and Religious Profiling Act

Last years' event on Capitol Hill took place in April of 2016 and was attended by 330 delegates from more than 28 states who met with some 200 congressional offices – one third of the House of Representatives and almost half of the Senate. This came at a pivotal time in the 2016 elections when Muslims needed to make their voice heard amongst rising Islamophobia in the election campaigns.

With the new change in administration it is more important than ever for Muslims to make their voice heard to their political constituents and combat the Islamophobic rhetoric and potential anti-Muslim policies being put into place by this change in government.

Prior to the event, a series of online training seminars will also be offered to registered participants on effective advocacy techniques and on the day’s advocacy issues.

Highlights of the agenda:

• On the first day of the event delegates will participate in training seminars, discuss the importance of selected advocacy issues and meet with elected members of congress, office staff and committee representatives.
• The second day will consist of additionally scheduled meetings with elected members of congress, office staff and committee representatives.

Because the possible erosion of civil rights and religious freedom under the new administration, it is critical that American Muslims make their voices heard to their national elected representatives..
