Course Instructors

Michelle De Waele, C-IAYT
Born in France, Michelle moved to the U.S. 24 years ago. She started practicing yoga in 2000, and progressively decided to let go of her corporate career to dedicate herself to teaching yoga full time. Michelle is certified with the International Association of Yoga Therapists. Using the adaptation and the application of ancient yoga to today’s health concept, she offers small therapeutic classes and works privately with clients to help them manage their health conditions. She adapts yoga to the needs of people with specific or persistent health conditions individually tailoring protocols to address health challenges while respecting the client's level of physical ability and lifestyle. She uses a holistic approach & alternative support that help reduce symptoms, manage pain, restore balance, increase strength, improve emotional resiliency & expand personal awareness. These practices are smooth yet powerful techniques such as movement, breath work, meditation, mudras & mantras for her clients to explore and to connect with their true Self.

Saturday
Chair Yoga: Foundations
taught by Michelle De Waele, C-IAYT

This training will be an Introduction to Chair Yoga. You will learn how to build & sequence Chair Yoga classes. This skill can come in handy for regular yoga classes, working privately with students, or developing a niche with certain populations. This training is founded in the premise of guiding students to move the body in a safe way.

Have you had students find difficulty with standing poses?
-- Chairs can act as a stabilizing feature.

Ever had a more advanced student need a different challenge?
-- Chairs help enhance postures and allow access to the body in new, different ways.

Have students refrained from attending during injury/recovery phases because they couldn't get down to the floor, or are they in an ongoing healing process with a particular diagnosis?
-- Most yoga poses can be modified to be done from a seated position.

We'll explore more examples of how Chair Yoga can be useful to all students and may be necessary to accent or act as support during different times of life and with challenges students may face.

Join Michelle for this fun, informative session that outlines the following and more:
what chair yoga is
who it is for
how to design a practice

Sunday
Chair Yoga: Special Populations
taught by Hansa Knox, C-IAYT, LMT, KCYT

Note:  Basic Chair education is a prerequisite for this class.

This training will focus on using chairs for muscloskeletal compromises.  We all have students who come into class with spinal issues, neck and shoulder pain, doing some rehab from yoga or sports injuries and basic pathology such as arthritis.  What if they can't do a class on the floor?  How do we use a chair?

The morning will be a broad overview of using a chair to support spinal alignment issues such as lordosis, kyphosis, scoliosis and will include rebuilding core strength -- yes, even in a chair.  We will also isolate yoga movements in a chair for shoulders and legs.  Then, there will be a section on breathing and opening up the ribs, front, back and side body to deepen the ability for full breath.

The afternoon session will focus on selected pathology. It will be a bit fluid based on student requests.  The planned goal is to cover the pathology and then chair tools for students with arthritis (rheumatoid and osteo), Parkinson's and Multiple Sclerosis.

Much of the information will translate for students in any class.  Therefore, we will culminate the class with tools for teaching a multiple level class.  How do you lead a sun salutation with students standing, standing with the use of a chair, and those sitting in a chair?!  Please come and explore . . .
