Florida Mathematics Re-Design Institute 

On Thursday, June 27, 2019, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Florida Student Success Center, in partnership with the Florida College System (FCS) and with support from Helios Education Foundation, will be hosting the Florida Mathematics Re-Design Institute at the Hilton University of Florida Conference Center in Gainesville, FL. This one-day convening will gather leaders from Florida's K-20 education systems to explore strategies that promote student success in mathematics and progression through college to career. Participants will explore policy and practice recommendations in areas such as advising, course sequencing, pathways, assessment and curricular alignment. 

Objectives
This one-day institute seeks to…

• Bring together district, college and university stakeholders with national organizations, policymakers and experts from other states to engage in a cross-functional discussion about mathematics pathways re-design;
• Highlight recommendations for state policy, institutional (or local) policy and evidence-based practices designed for scale; and
• Encourage participants to reflect on how their institution is making progress in reducing barriers to student success in mathematics, and identify strategies to take back to their institutions for consideration.

All interested individuals are encouraged to attend—the institute is designed to accommodate individuals and those who attend as a group. We encourage participation from stakeholder groups including, but not limited to, teachers, faculty members, guidance counselors, curriculum specialists, academic affairs administrators and student affairs administrators, among others. Background

According to recent research, traditional developmental mathematics sequences are the most significant academic barrier to postsecondary attainment, with only 28 percent of community college students completing one gateway math course within their first two years (Advancing Mathematics Pathways for Student Success, 2018). The role of the Florida Student Success Center, an initiative of the Florida College System within the Florida Department of Education, is to support institutional initiatives that improve college completion rates and promote student success. Mathematics pathways re-design was the primary initiative of the Florida Student Success Center in its first year of implementation.

Through the Florida Student Success Center’s work, more than 80 mathematics faculty, administrators and key stakeholders from Florida's K-20 education system spent 2018-2019 analyzing research, data, information and examples from other states to better understand ways to eliminate mathematics barriers that prevent students from succeeding. The result of such work is a series of recommendations – both policy and practice – designed to increase alignment within and between educational systems. The institute will highlight recommendations for high school to postsecondary alignment, FCS mathematics sequencing and college to university alignment.
