Meeting Literacy Demands in Career and Technical Schools

For teachers in all content areas, department heads, principals, supervisors, curriculum coordinators, curriculum committee members, and special educators

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course, using the nationally known and research-based Collins Writing framework, provides educators in career and technical schools with practical strategies and techniques. The Collins framework is designed to improve student literacy skills while also deepening the understanding of course materials—both academic and technical. A central feature of study will be the need to teach and use both academic and course specific vocabulary with students in all areas. This course will guide teachers as they design and implement a practical, effective, sustainable writing program for the CTE classroom.  

COURSE GOALS 

  • To investigate how teachers in the CTE school can use appropriate literacy-based assignments to motivate, challenge, and improve student performance in both academic and career/technical areas
  • To determine what authentic literacy assignments can improve student performance in the CTE school
  • To provide teachers in the CTE school with the skills and confidence to use literacy appropriately in their classrooms to improve student literacy skills while enhancing student achievement in both academic and career/technical areas

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • Implement methods to improve student comprehension of informational text
  • Include writing as an instructional tool to elicit and expand student background knowledge
  • Use reading and writing to enrich career and technical skills and content area knowledge 
  • Create authentic and engaging writing assignments that help to both teach and assess the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to success in their specific courses 
  • Motivate and prepare students with authentic, real-world writing opportunities
  • Empower students to self-correct and peer edit
  • Establish clear, focused criteria for effectively assessing writing
  • Grade and assign the ready-to-use writing assignments they will receive which have been designed specifically for career and technical courses
  • Use common language and strategies across all grade levels
  • Select, teach, and use domain specific and academic vocabulary
