In tribute to the 10th anniversary Cumberland Arts Festival, 8/18/2018, a Plein Air Competition is being held to honor "Ten Worthy Places" within the historic Town of Cumberland, IN Cumberland Arts Festival is an arts, crafts and music festival held each third Saturday of August along Saturn Street, one block south of the historic National Road, US-40.  Over 100 arts and crafts exhibitors span the distance from historic Cumberland First Baptist Church (1832) to the Cumberland Town Hall and summer Farmer's Market.

News Update - 6/7/2018 - The entries of the “Ten Worthy Places” Plein Air Competition will be showcased to the public at a Preview Reception on Aug. 15, 2018, Wednesday, 5 to 8 p.m. at The Buckley House, 11706 E. Washington, Cumberland, IN.    

Tom Hendryx, Hendryx Mortuaries, is offering the use of the historic Buckley House for the Preview Reception.  The entries for the plein air art competition will be displayed and the plein art entries will be judged the night of the Buckley House Gallery.  Artists will be allowed to have other limited works for display and sale.  The prizes of the “Ten Worthy Places” Plein Air Competition will be announced at the Cumberland Arts Festival on Aug. 18, 2018.

Guidelines and Information for Plein Air Artists

Important Dates:

June 15  - Extended Deadline - June 30

All registration forms must be received or postmarked

 All artists will be assigned one "Worthy Place" to paint. (Each artist may choose one additional site from the list to paint; maximum two entries per artist.  Work from additional site follows the same guidelines as the “Worthy Places” assignment.  Two-dimensional medium on a 16" x 20" maximum canvas.  Submitted by Aug. 10, 2018, 3 p.m. See below Artists’ Terms of Agreement section.)

June 16 - August 10

Plein Air Painting Ensues.  

August 1 - 15

We will arrange for TV and Radio Showcase of various artists between the dates of Aug. 1 - 15, 2018

August 10

Turn in completed, framed and ready to be hung works to Cumberland Arts, Inc.

August 18

Festival Day!   9 a.m. - 4 p.m.  

Finished Works displayed, adjudicated and put on sale

Awards

First Prize: $500

Second Price: $300

Third Prize: $200

Best of Each Additional Worthy Places:$100 Each

 


Artists' Terms of Agreement

Artists will:

1. Complete Assigned "Worthy Place" artwork (list, location and photo of all Ten Worthy Places is online.)
2. Turn in one or two completed, framed and ready to be hung artworks by Aug. 10, 2018, 3 p.m. to Cumberland Arts, Inc. at Cumberland First Baptist Church, 116 S. Muessing Street, Cumberland, IN 46229. Work to be in a two-dimensional medium on a 16"x20" maximum canvas.  All work to be completed en plein air without assistance of photography.
3. *Attend festival day and be present for the awards ceremony at 1 p.m. and sale to follow.
4. Agree to have art displayed within the Town of Cumberland (art can be sold on display.)
5. Agree to a retail price commensurate with your normal pricing structure.
6. A 25% commission on all sold works will be retained by Cumberland Arts, Inc.
7. All sales will be handled by Cumberland Arts, Inc.
8. Allow images of artwork entered in the competition to be used by Cumberland Arts, Inc. for publicity purposes. 

Please Note

The Plein Air painters are asked to attend the event so that there is a celebratory atmosphere at the Plein Air display, with interaction between the festival visitors and the artists.  There is also the hope that attendance by the artists will promote the sale of the artwork.  However, we understand that circumstances and distance could prevent attendance on event day. 

Application Procedure

Artists may apply using this online registration process, as well as by mail and email.  All applications must be completed and postmarked no later than June 15, 2018.  Artists must complete the registration form, agree to the terms and conditions of the event and pay a $25 non-refundable registration fee.*

(*Cumberland Arts, Inc. reserves the right to cancel the event due to insufficient entries and refund the registration fee in full.)

If you want to display a few additional art pieces at the festival, there will be limited space for you to sell additional works.  

If you would like a full 10 x 10 space to display and sell your artwe welcome you to register as an art vendor.  

Festival booth categories are the following: Artist Vendor, Arts Related Business, Educational Business, Non-proft Arts Organization, Other Non-profit Organizations and Civic Service Organizations, Non Arts Related Business, Food Vendors, Entertainment.

THE LESSOR SHALL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INJURY OR LOSS OF ITEMS THAT ARISE OR COME TO THE LESSEE OR HIS EMPLOYEES OR PERSONNEL OR HIS GOODS FROM ANY CAUSE WHATEVER WHILE SAID PREMISES ARE BEING OCCUPIED UNDER THIS AGREEMENT. I HAVE READ, UNDERSTAND AND WILL COMPLY WITH ALL PROVISIONS AND POLICIES OFTHIS APPLICATION. I UNDERSTAND THAT ANY VIOLATION MAY RESULT IN MY DISMISSAL WITH NO REFUNDS. I HAVE READ THE ABOVE APPLICATION AND UNDERSTAND ITS RULES AND REGULATIONS.

Cancellation Policy and Early Set-Up

Cancellation Policy

The festival will occur, rain or shine, and there are no booth refunds due to inclement weather or acts of God/Nature. Cancellations may be accepted, but no refunds after July 1.  There are no refunds for any reason after this date.

Early Set-Up

Early set-up will be allowed from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 17, 2018. Please contact us to arrange.
