The Topic

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT): Studying Black Holes from the South Pole

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) project is a very-long-baseline interferometry experiment to observe supermassive black holes at the highest resolution ever achieved, combining a network of radio telescopes around the world. A few months ago, the EHT announced its first results: imaging the nuclear black hole in the galaxy M87. In this talk, I will review the EHT results as well as the efforts that led to the first scientific outcome of the project, including the instrument development for the South Pole Telescope that I have been heavily involved in.

The Speaker:

 Dr. Junhan Kim
Robert A. Millikan Prize Postdoctoral Fellow
Division of Physics, Math & Astronomy
California Institute of Technology (CalTech)

Junhan is a Robert A. Millikan Postdoctoral Scholar in Physics at Caltech, starting September 2019. He obtained his undergraduate degrees in electrical engineering and astronomy from Seoul National University in Korea and did his Ph.D. studies in Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona. For his thesis entitled "Instruments and Statistical Tools to Study Supermassive Black Holes at Event Horizon Scales", he traveled to the South Pole four times since 2014 to incorporate the South Pole Telescope to the Event Horizon Telescope array.
