The John Scholz Stroke Education Conference is dedicated to the memory of John P. Scholz, PT, PhD, a highly regarded movement scientist renowned for his ability to take complex theoretical concepts of motor control and apply them to the understanding and treatment of neurologic problems.

Dr. Scholz was professor of Physical Therapy at the University of Delaware, and, for many years, a member of the Board of Directors of the Delaware Stroke Initiative.

The Sixteenth Annual Stroke Education Conference is co-sponsored by the Delaware Stroke Initiative, Delaware Academy of Family Physicians, and Delaware Academy of Medicine / Delaware Public Health Association. It features 12 different presentations.

GLOBAL OBJECTIVES:

At the conclusion of this conference, participants will be able to:

- Illustrate how to appropriately evaluate and manage hemorrhagic stroke
- Give examples of stroke caregiver support available in Delaware
- Describe the varying treatments options used by the University of Delaware when treating stroke patients
- Identify the risks opioid use has on the likelihood of stroke in new and recurrent drug users
- Discuss the role migraines play in stroke diagnosis, evaluation, and prevention
- Recognize the way stroke can manifest in neonates and discuss evaluation and treatment options for this unique group of patients
- Discuss the importance of standardizing stroke recognition and evaluation protocols
- Explain how transcranial magnetic (TMS) and DC (tDCS) electrical stimulation can enhance the effect of motor rehabilitation after a stroke
- Discuss new approaches to the evaluation, treatment, and prevention of TIAs
- Demonstrate the correct procedures when using the NIH Stroke Scale, and employ its use in an appropriate manner
- Identify appropriate rehabilitation options for patients suffering from vascular dementia as a complication of stroke
- Discuss important trials regarding hypertension and stroke prevention
