Course Description

This course is focused on the ankle/foot complex and related to LE biomechanics for the orthopedic/sports based PT, PTA, and ATC. This is an intermediate level course with emphasis on pragmatic examination, evaluation, and eclectic but evidence based intervention consistent with the Description of Specialty Practice in Orthopedic PT, the Description of Specialty Practice in Sports PT & the Orthopedic Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG's) in the lower leg & ankle/foot region. CPG's published by the APTA Orthopedic Section discussed during this course include:

  • Heel Pain - Plantar Fasciitis
  • Ankle Stability & Movement Coordination Impairments
  • Achilles Pain, Stiffness, and Muscle Power Deficits: Achilles Tendinitis

This course will also cover a myriad of the other pathologies not covered in the CPG's. Furthermore, a strong emphasis of this course will be to develop rapid pattern recognition of commonly seen movement & pathological disorders and link these to pragmatic and customizable intervention plans. This ~50% lab based course will include a focus on selecting and performing sound psycho-motor procedures and avoiding common pitfalls associated with inadequate psycho-motor skill development and clinical reasoning. This course is open to physical therapists, PTA's, and ATC's. However, this course level is ideally suited for orthopedic/sport residency level knowledge/skills. Those with less or more expertise are encouraged to attend, but discussions may be re-directed as needed to provide the level of content expected of a Sport/Orthopedic residency program.

Suggested Pre-Course Assignment:

Review ankle/foot biomechanics as well as manual examination and intervention skills on Dr. Porter's YouTube channel. This will allow for a "flipped classroom" model and much deeper learning if you have already exposed yourself to this material prior to lecture/discussion and lab. This is especially important if you do not have basic competency with these skills.
