Developing Number Sense and Fluency

July 17, 2019

8:30 AM – 3:30 PM

Presenter:  Kricket McClure, Math Consultant

  Location

OVEC 100 Alpine Road

Shelbyville, KY 40065

 Purpose

Participants will deepen their own conceptual understanding of number sense and fluency and will learn strategies for doing the same with ALL their students, including students with disabilities.  Topics explored will include:

  • The learning progressions students go through in developing their number sense – at a variety of levels, continuing throughout their mathematics education.
  • A more comprehensive understanding of what is meant by “fluency,” including accuracy, flexibility, appropriate strategy use, and efficiency.
  •  A variety of strategies for developing number sense and fluency with ALL students at all levels / ages.

As always, we will develop our understandings within the framework of the Standards for Math Practice, the Effective Math Teaching Practices, the CSA strategy, and a hands-on / minds-on approach to doing mathematics.
