January 22, 2018: Assessment and Treatment of Children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech
Presented by Jenya Iuzzini-Seigel, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

REGISTER (January 22 Session)

This session will focus on the differential diagnosis and treatment of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS).  During the first part of the session, attendees will learn evidence-based methods to differentiate CAS and other speech sound disorders. Videos will be presented and attendees will have the opportunity to practice rating CAS speech features to build confidence in making differential diagnoses.  The second part of the session will focus on evidence-based treatment methods and principles of motor learning that facilitate learning and retention for children with CAS.  Various methods will be discussed.  Finally, attendees will apply their new skills to case studies. March 21, 2018: Inclusive Practices and the Role of the SLP

Inclusive Practices support all students being educated together, receiving support services together, playing together, and living together. Inclusive practices lead to a sense of belonging for students and staff. This Workshop is designed to address:  (1) why Inclusive Practices are a vital student-centered consideration for all students and educators; (2) how SL services can support a student’s educational program through a variety of collaborative options that are not separate from the general classroom; (3) how to connect SL IEP goals to classroom learning targets; and (4) how the SLP can reconsider the collaborative activities of scheduling and co-planning.

This is a highly interactive workshop in which participants are provided multiple opportunities to share and discuss how the topics will apply to their work. Participants will leave with ideas for immediate implementation as well as long range ideas for enhancing and sustaining their work with students and colleagues.

 

May 8, 2018: The Relationship Between Speech Sound Disorders and Learning to Read: The Role of the Speech/Language Pathologist in the Prevention of Reading Difficulties

Children who have an early history of speech sound disorders often exhibit problems when learning to read after their expressive phonological deficits have been remediated and they have been dismissed from speech.  This seminar will describe the relationship between speech sound disorders and reading difficulties and the role of the SLP in collaborating with other professions to support students who are “at-risk” for reading problems.

Objectives:

1.  Understand speech/language characteristics of children who are at-risk for later reading problems.

2.  Explore potential interprofessional practices to support children who are at-risk for reading problems.
