Addressing School Refusal and Truancy Using a Collaborative, Trauma Informed Approach

During the 2017-2018 school year, the number of Wisconsin schools losing points for high levels of student absenteeism increased 21.5% from the previous year, according to the DPI’s report card system. What are the reasons for this increase? How can schools effectively address chronic absenteeism using collaborative, evidence-based, and trauma informed practices? This workshop will invite participants to examine the reasons for chronic absenteeism in their schools. Effective strategies and resources for reducing chronic absenteeism at all levels of a multi-tiered system of support will be presented.  

Presenters:

Mary Wimmer PhD, is a School Psychologist working in the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District and CESA #1 and is an adjunct lecturer at Marquette University. She is the author of Evidence-Based Practices for School Refusal and Truancy (2013) published by the National Association of School Psychologists.

Laura Sage is Lead School Psychologist and Co-Leader of the district trauma team for the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District.
