Implementing learner-centered practices involves more than adopting an expanded set of instructional skills and strategies. It is not just one more thing that educators are asked to do. This transformation is about approaching the work of learning and teaching differently. When we have a deep understanding of each learner, we can determine the appropriate blend of learning modalities and strategies to ensure success for all.
Following a half day Boot Camp featuring the “why” and “what” of learner-centered practice, you will dive deeper into our learner-centered framework, the Honeycomb model, as we explore practical ways to implement these practices into your learning environment.
Who should attend?Any educator who is looking to start or build upon existing learner-centered practices.
Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to participate in any of the open Field Experience dates at a 20% discounted rate. The PROMO code for registering for both of these workshops will be included in the conformation email.
This workshop is open to Institute for Personalized Learning members only. Not sure if your school or district is a member? Email Sarah at snelson@institute4pl.org to inquire.
Wednesday, February 19 - Learner Agency and Independence
As educators, it is our hope and professional responsibility to prepare our learners for their future. Empowering learners by providing them with opportunities and experiences that develop agency and independence is essential to this success and is the ultimate goal of personalized learning.
In the morning we will discuss how educators can create a culture that supports the development of learner independence and agency through the purposeful implementation of proficiency based progress and flexible time and pace. The afternoon session will explore ways in which we can support the development of life-long learners who are intrinsically motivated and find purpose in learning through curiosity driven learning and deeper learning through application models.
Thursday, March 5 - Educator as a Learning Coach
As we make the shift from conventional educator driven practices to learner centered dispositions, it is essential for the educator to serve as a learning coach. Learning coaches work alongside learners to achieve shared goals, provide resources and learning supports as needed to ensure learner success, and help students to be the drivers of the learning process. Coaches facilitate learning through opportunities for experiences, inquiry, and exploration.
In the morning we will discuss the importance of the coach’s role when conferring and conferencing in the learning environment, along with sharing strategies for providing timely actionable feedback. The afternoon session will explore multiple instructional methods and modes that move educators towards the role of a coach. We will look at how the use of learning readiness based groupings supports the shift to a learner-centered environment.
Thursday, April 23 - Physical Environment and Resources
Learner-centered environments require educators to rethink the use of time, space, and place for learning. To best meet the instructional needs of our learners, educators need to be flexible with the configuration of their learning environment and digital or non-digital resources.
In the morning we will explore a variety of learning aligned technologies that transform the learning tasks, allowing for deeper understanding or mastery of content. During the afternoon, educators will look at examples of how to create flexible learning spaces to meet the needs of learners, including collaborative learning. We will also explore how to support opportunities for community connections and anytime, anywhere learning.
Thursday, May 14 - Developing a Community of Learners
Developing a community of learners is essential to cultivating an equitable, learner-centered environment. A strong sense of community is best developed when a learner has an understanding of self, engages in meaningful relationships, and establishes trust with others within the learning environment.
Participants will explore the importance of cultural and life relevance, as well as the development of a learner profile to better understand one’s self. The afternoon will delve into shared commitment to success and how to develop interdependent teams to support the community.
Thursday, June 4 - Co-designers of Assessment and Learning
When we think of learners as resources for their learning, we do not have to stretch far to see the value of co-designing learning experiences together. After all, they know what interests them, they need to see the purpose of what they are asked to learn, and they often have insights as to how they might approach learning tasks and assessment.
In the morning we will explore learner voice as it relates to setting personal learning goals and utilizing assessment as evidence of learning over time. The afternoon will focus on the four steps to co-design a customized learning path with learners, allowing them to take ownership, find greater meaning, and increase independence.
