Course Completion Statement:
To receive contact hours for the continuing education program, the registrant must sign in and sign out on the sign in sheet, attend the entire program and complete an on-line evaluation. By the day after the program, a link to the program evaluation will be emailed to all the attendees. The survey will be open for one week. At the end of one week, all those attendees who submitted surveys will receive their certificates via email.

From time to time, the Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern New Jersey uses photographs of conference events in its promotional materials. Unless this permission is revoked in writing to the Partnership, by virtue of their attendance, all conference visitors agree to the use of their likeness in such materials. 

Cancellations:
Although registration fees are non-refundable, they are transferable. To transfer a registration, please contact Irina Polanco Ventura at iventura@partnershipmch.org or 973-268-2280 x155, no later than a week prior to the event.

Grievance Policy:
Any attendee with a complaint or grievance should contact the Partnership's Perinatal Mood Disorder (PMD) Program Manager, Irina Polanco Ventura, via email. Once received, the complaint will be acknowledged. It will then be reviewed and discussed by Partnership staff consisting of the PMD Program and Director of Education, Amy Gole, in a timely manner. A satisfactory solution will then be offered to the participant in writing. The attendee many register complaints with the approval entity with an option to appeal to the Board if displeased with the results of the process described above. To file a grievance, please contact Irina Polanco Ventura at iventura@partnerhipmch.org.

Focus on Fathers' Perinatal Mental Health


Learner Outcome:
Participants will be able to incorporate screening for depression and anxiety in fathers after the birth of a baby and apply strategies which provide emotional support for men and their transition into their role as fathers, including those with babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). 


Objectives:

  • Explain how postpartum mental health problems can manifest in fathers
  • Cite the prevalence rates of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders among new fathers
  • List screening tools available to detect postpartum depression in men
  • Review the impact of paternal depression on spouses/partners, sons and daughters
  • Recognize critical processes in the unfolding of attachment, including attunement and
    co-regulation
  • Describe key psychosocial elements in the transition to fatherhood and men's perinatal mental health
  • List evidence-based approaches to better engage fathers with perinatal services with their children and partners, during pregnancy and early parenthood
  • Recognize the role, functions and benefits of mental health professionals in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) setting
  • Discuss the unique emotional journey of fathers with children in the NICU
  • List of the cognitive, hormonal, behavioral, and emotional changes that occur in men as
    they transition into fatherhood
  • Describe male and father sensitive language for culturally competent outreach and engagement 

Target Audience
Professionals working with new fathers such as Social Workers in maternal and child health settings, Nurses in perinatal and neonatal nursing and mental health clinicians working with postpartum families.
