Keynote Speaker: Laurie Byrd
Is the current Women’s head basketball coach at Santa Fe Christian High School. Laurie grew up in Flint Michigan in a family that had eight children. Her father Joe, owned and ran a boxing gym (Joe Byrd Boxing Academy) in Flint. Laurie attended Hamady High School. Laurie has served as an Assistant Coach professionally in the WNBA for several years: Washington Mystics 2011,New York 2009-2010,Houston 2007-2008,Detroit Shock (including a WNBA championship) 2003-2005. Laurie first entered the coaching ranks @ the University of Detroit (Assistant) 1999-2002. Coach Byrd has an extensive playing background.
She played professionally: (ABL) American Basketball League: San Jose Lasers 1996-97, Atlanta Glory 1997-98, (WBL) Women’s Basketball League: Kentucky Marauders 1986, Chicago Spirit 1983. Laurie also spent time playing overseas in several countries: Sweden, Spain, Italy and Switzerland (holds Suisse record for most points in a game 69pts). Laurie received many awards and honors @ Eastern Michigan University: Lead the team each year in Scoring and Assist 1978-1982 : (MAC) Mid-American Conference Scoring Leader 23.1ppg (13th Nationally) 1982, Athlete of the Year 1981/1982, 2nd All-Time Career Scoring leader 1,899 1978-1982, Hall of Fame 1993, Became the 1st women and 4th player to have her Jersey Retired 2011
Laurie received a recent nomination to the Naismith Hall of Fame!
