Learning Objectives:
By participating in this symposium you will be able to:
  • Understand how characteristics of ASD can be considered strengths
  • Learn an affirmative process for informing a person about his or her ASD diagnosis
  • Learn ways to meet many challenges often faced by people with ASD
  • Learn methods for being specific in an IEP to gain individualized and meaningful educational benefits
  • Understand the format of an IEP, detailing how services are decided, implemented and measured
  • Identify collaborative approaches to enhance the parent-professional relationship
  • Separate facts from myths regarding individuals with ASD and sexuality
  • Identify key issues related to sexuality, teen dating violence, and forms of dating abuse
  • Identify parenting tips and strategies for teens with ASD
  • Understand perspectives of parents living with ASD 
  • Learn strategies to prevent common pitfalls parents have when raising a child with ASD
  • Understand common emotions experienced by parents of children with ASD
  • Learn ways support meaningful participation in recreation activities
  • Identify strategies to support successful inclusion of people with ASD in recreation settings

Continuing Education Credits:

This course is offered for 0.55 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate level; Professional area). Participants are expected to be present for the entire program. Individuals who are not present for the full program will not be recommended for ASHA CEUs. No partial credit will be provided.

Educators and other Professionals:  Professionals are expected to be present for the entire program and will receive a certificate of professional development. 

Registration deadline: May 20, 2014. 

Cancellation Policy:  You may cancel without penalty by giving written notice on or before May 9, 2014.  Cancellations received after May 9, 2014 will be charged a cancellation fee equal to 25% of the registration fee.  No refunds will be made for cancellations postmarked or received after May 23, 2014.  All refunds will be processed after the symposium.
