10:00 AM – 11:00 AM Planning an Automated Parking Guidance and Wayfinding System: An Interactive Experience

The session will start with a fifteen-minute overview of automated parking guidance and wayfinding systems, including what they are, what they provide, and how they differ. After the overview, we will split into groups. Each group will be provided with a map of a mock campus, a project budget, and a supply of sample cut-out images of the various system components, to be placed on the map as the system is designed. A sample price sheet will also be provided, to determine the estimated costs of the systems.  The groups will have twenty-five minutes to collaborate on the plan and design of the system. Facilitators (Walker) will keep things moving and encourage group participation. The final twenty minutes will be spent with volunteer presenters from each group sharing the designs and budgets of each of the four systems, followed by a group analysis of the four designs and comments/recommendations by Walker.

3:00 PM – 4:00 PM Tactical Parking: How to Innovate in Parking with No Budget

This presentation starts off by setting the stage for tactical parking by explaining the more common concepts of tactical urbanism and tactical transit, complete with current, real-world examples and videos. We then explain how the concept can be applied to parking, as it relates to five key challenges.

  1. Availability: is there parking when and where people need?

  2. Abandonment: are people choosing not to go somewhere for lack of parking options?

  3. Congestion: how do we handle traffic volume, pollution, road rage and accidents?

  4. Pricing: how do you find the perfect rate for each time and location?

  5. Craters: how much parking is needed, and what should be done with the excess?

We then briefly suggest tactical parking solutions to each issue above before splitting the audience into smaller groups. Participants are encouraged to discuss their own tactical parking solutions to one of the above concerns, or come up with other parking issues being faced in their communities and a tactical parking idea to try when they return. The room is then brought back together and time allocated for groups to share their best ideas.
