A Life in Reiki:  Through diary entries and private correspondence, voice recordings, personal belongings, and rare photos, take an exclusive and intimate look at the life and legacy of the  First Lady of Reiki, Hawayo Takata

Join Reiki Master Joyce Winough for a special exploration of the life and
legacy of Hawayo Takata.  We will be sharing photos, documents and audio of Takata Sensei and her life in Reiki.

Born on the island of Kauai in 1900, Hawayo Takata was widowed early in life with two daughters. She became gravely ill. Her personal healing journey took her to Japan where she found and learned Reiki. Takata brought her teacher and the practice to Hawaii, just as her students would bring her to North America. Hawayo Takata called her practice Usui Shiki Ryoho  – The Usui Method of Natural Healing – and she shared Reiki with the world until her death in 1980.

After Takata's passing, her daughter Alice Takata Furumoto preserved her personal belongings – a treasure trove of notebooks, photos, letters, recordings, gifts from her teacher Chujiro Hayashi, and even an original Reiki table. Under the direction of Takata's successor and granddaughter, Phyllis Lei Furumoto, these items were organized, cataloged and donated to the University of California, Santa Barbara. Many more items were kept within the family.

On Sunday,
Johannes Reindl will join us as we see a glimpse of Furumoto’s legacy as shared by Joyce and Johannes.
For the next forty years after Takata’s death, Phyllis created and nurtured a global Reiki community while defining and articulating the system of Reiki that her grandmother taught.
We will get to be with Johannes, the current Lineage Bearer and Grandmaster and listen to his stories of being with his master during the last twenty years of his Reiki journey. Johannes’ clarity of the gift he has been given as well as his refreshing youth will complete our journey through three generations of Spiritual Lineage of Usui Shiki Ryoho.

With Great Gratitude,

Joyce Winough
