Mediation for Experienced Practitioners:

How to maximize the benefits of the BSEA mediation process

This interactive presentation is designed for professionals in the field of Special Education who already understand the basics of BSEA Mediation. The presentation will center around how to know when your case is “ripe” for mediation, how to prepare your case for mediation, how to prepare your parties for mediation, helpful advocacy techniques, understanding form language (including confidentiality and waivers of past claims), and what happens after a mediation, among other topics. Experienced advocates, attorneys, etc. will have the opportunity to gain insight into the BSEA Mediation process and ask questions to help create a deeper understanding of mediation, negotiation, client representation, and settlement in the field of Special Education.

    Presenters:
Since joining the BSEA in 2010, Myrto Flessas has mediated hundreds of cases in more than 60 school districts. After graduating from Temple University School of Law in 2000, Ms. Flessas was a principal attorney in the firm of Flessas & Finocche, LLP. Most of her work was focused on representing parents in special education disputes. Ms. Flessas also provided pro-bono representation for students in special education through the Boston Bar Association and with the Massachusetts Women’s Bar Association in the field of domestic violence divorce.  Prior to her work at the BSEA, Ms. Flessas had the opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors for the Federation for Children with Special Needs. Along with mediating cases at the BSEA, Ms. Flessas runs informational trainings for parents and school districts to help the parties better understand mediation and use the process to promote meaningful and positive results.
