               Transition Roundtable                    With:

Join SPaN for a discussion about the transition planning process, beginning with the student’s vision and following that to the student’s successful emergence from special education to a productive and fulfilling adult life. The workshop will cover applicable federal and state laws, transition assessments, identifying and implementing appropriate services, and referral agencies.

Three experts will join us to share their knowledge and experience helping students achieve the promise of IDEA: to facilitate effective progress for students with disabilities toward “further education, employment, and independent living.” 

Program will include a moderated discussion and plenty of Q & A time with the presenters.

Meet the Speakers

Kelley Challen, Ed.M., CAS, is NESCA’s Director of Transition Services, overseeing planning, consultation, evaluation, coaching, case management, training and program development services; she is also the Assistant Director, supporting day-to-day operations of the practice. Ms. Challen began facilitating programs for children and adolescents with special needs in 2004. She spent several years at the MGH Aspire Program where she founded an array of social, life and career skill development programs for teens and young adults with Asperger’s Syndrome and related profiles. Ms. Challen has also worked at the Northeast Arc as Program Director for the Spotlight Program, a drama-based social pragmatics program, serving youth with a wide range of diagnoses and collaborating with several school districts to design in-house social skills and transition programs. While Ms. Challen has special expertise in supporting students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, she provides support to individuals with a wide range of developmental and learning abilities, including students with complex medical needs.

Brooke Howard, M.S., OTR/L is the Director of Transition to Adulthood at the Ivy Street School and the Clinical Director of Skills for Life. Brooke has a Master's degree in Occupational Therapy from Sargent College at Boston University and an undergraduate degree in neuroscience from Oberlin College. Brooke has been working as a licensed Occupational Therapist since 2005 and has been working with transition aged youth at Ivy Street since 2009. Before coming to Ivy Street, she worked in inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation and supervised the outpatient program at Franciscan Hospital for Children. Brooke also worked as an adjunct faculty in the Occupational Therapy department at Sargent College from 2010-2014. Brooke was a founding member of the transition program at Ivy Street and has continued to grow, develop and support the program since. Most recently Brooke was a founding partner of Ivy Street’s community-based program, Skills For Life where she works in the community with young adults who seek to gain more independence.

Becki Lauzon, M.A., CRC Becki currently works at ACCEPT Education Collaborative in a variety of roles. She is the Team Chair of Transition Programs. Becki’s areas of responsibility include conducting transition assessments, consulting to school districts as a DESE endorsed Transition Specialist, providing professional development trainings for districts on transition planning, transition assessments and job coaching, and providing oversight and supervision to ACCEPT’s transition programs. Becki received her Bachelor of Arts in Social and Rehabilitation Services and Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling from Assumption College. She is also a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) and has supervised numerous graduate students as interns at ACCEPT. In addition to her positionat ACCEPT, Becki previously worked as an Adjunct Faculty member in the Human Services and Rehabilitation Studies Department at Assumption College.
